If you're already at 3.1.3 you can use redsn0w to jailbreak a 3G phone.
If you're at 3.1.2 then you should avoid going to 3.1.3 as it is impossible to unlock.
If you're at 3.1.2 and simply want to restore to a fresh copy of 3.1.2 I think you can just download the official 3.1.2 firmware and shift-restore to it in iTunes. As far as I know, with a 3G phone you can always install whichever OS version you want. Beware though, as I said already, going to 3.1.3 will update the baseband which is not unlockable, if you need that.

so pretty much after ci posted this thread i saw that 3.1.3 can now be unlocked and jailbroken with snowbreeze, it says the baseband version beginning with 4, and mine is the 5.11.07 one, hich in the footnotes at the bottom says i can do this one too,
should i try to restore to 3.1.3 or stay and try 3.1.2?
thanks

How many times to I have to post about this..
Anyway,
You cant go back to firmware 3.1.2 as apple stopped verifying the installs, there is only hope if backed up your ECID SHSH using Cydia before you upgraded, if you did do this read iGuru's post on downgrading using that method HERE.
JAILBREAK ON 3.1.3:
If you have a mac you can now use PWNAGE TOOL 3.1.5 that was released today.
Otherwise use redsnow, there is a chance of jailbreaking, but I suggest using the new PWNAGE TOOL.
IF YOU HAVE A 3GS YOU CANT DO ANY JAILBREAKING YET ON 3.1.3 NEW OR OLD BOOTROM (unless you had it jailbroken before and it has the old bootrom, then there is a small chance of jailbreaking, but none of Unlocking)
UNLOCK ON 3.1.3:
FORGET IT unless you somehow have the old base band which no one with 3.1.3 would.
Srry but no unlock for you.
Hope this helps
I STILL SUGGEST STAYING WITH 3.1.2 as 3.1.3 doesn't fix any bugs on the 3g really.Last edited by Vikom Media; 02-07-2010 at 06:45 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

He has a 3G not 3GS. But in either case, you can not downgrade the baseband.

As far as I know, iPhone 3G doesn't need to have its firmware signed.
Don't update. You might have your shsh files stored on Cydia. Read about it here: Caching Apple's Signature Server - Jay Freeman (saurik)Last edited by dhamien; 02-09-2010 at 05:32 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
