If you recently bought your iPhone 3GS, chances are it has the new boot loader.

Apple changed up the process of how your iPhone boots up, with the most recent batches of the 3GS, which forces you to have a "tethered jailbreak". Whenever it turns off, you need to plug it into the computer to boot it up.
