Question I don't have my IBEC or IBSS, what should be my next move??

I bought my 3GS 5 days ago, so I never had the opportunity to grab my certificates. I've read as much as I can find on the subject, but at this point I'm not coming across information I haven't already read.
I have my ECID (but not the SHSH one which I haven't been able to find info on)
    I have 3.0.1 with 04.26.08 (I haven't upgraded or anything)

a side question would be how to get the ECID SHSH (is it necessary?)
but my main question is: what should I be waiting for? Should/could I be doing something?

    Thanks guys!

You should go ahead and run redsn0w to jailbreak it, download ultrasn0w in Cydia if you need to unlock it. You don't need to wait for anything. After jailbreaking, go to Cydia and press 'make life easier' or something like that, your SHSH will be backed up on Cydia's server.

As to storing your SHSH yourself, this thread has more than enough info in the first post:
[Howto] Setup local 3GS restore verification server (ECID SHSH)

I also found this info: "(Windows 7 users): redsn0w may crash for some users running Windows 7. To get around freezing and crashing of redsn0w, right click on redsn0w.exe and then click on “Properties”. Switch to “Compatibility” tab and make sure you check “Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 3)”. Now simply start the application by right clicking on the .exe file and then click on “Run as administrator”. This should solve your problem on Windows 7."

Edit: Doing these steps will have you jailbreaked at 3.0.1, and your SHSH blobs will be for 3.1 through Cydia. If you wanted to get to 3.1.2, i would recommend a custom firmware created with PwnageTool that is only for Mac though the custom firmware can be used on any OS.

Awesome! Thanks so much for the really helpful reply. So as for getting the certificates later, does it just mean that at whatever point I do get them, that will be te lowest version I'll be able to downgrade to, right? If i want to get 3.1.2, should I go straight to that (if that's even possible), or should I do it incrementally in the order you have in your reply?

Again, thanks so much, I really appreciate the guidance

Whatever certificates Apple is signing at the time will be the certificate that will be saved on Cydia and/or using firmware umbrella. And yes, whatever certificate you have saved, you will be able to downgrade to that in the future if ever needed, no lower.

Your choice as to the order of things. Upgrading through iTunes to 3.1.2 will give you the new baseband 05.11.07 which currently cannot be unlocked. The unlock is scheduled to be out on the 4th. 3.1.2 can be jailbreaked with blackra1n or PwnageTool 3.1.4(Mac)
    Dev-Team Blog - Pwnage Pie
    blackra1n

Some people dislike the blackra1n jailbreak from a few posts i've read. I don't really care about the features of 3.1.2, so i haven't updated. I did create a custom 3.1.2 firmware on a friends Mac in case i have to restore.

Note: If you plan to use PwnageTool to jailbreak after updating to 3.1.2, you'll need to be on the Mac for the process. If you jailbreak at 3.0.1, you can install a custom firmware created with PwnageTool on any system.

If, as your description says, you're still on a stock iPhone, I'd download redsn0w and go to town. All you have to do is open redsn0w and it will tell you what to do from there.
