Default new 3gs with OS 3.0

Hey guys, I bought the phone a couple of months ago and I haven't even updated the OS yet. I was wondering if I should update to the latest OS and then jailbreak it or if I should just use the OS that's on right now. The current OS is 3.0 (7A341). Thanks.

That depends on if you're ever going to need to unlock it.

If you do need to unlock, you should only update to 3.1.2 through PwnageTool.

If you will never need an unlock, you can either stay on 3.0 and jailbreak it using Redsn0w or you can update to 3.1.2 through iTunes and jailbreak it with either Blackra1n or PwnageTool.

I don't think I will ever need to unlock it. I tried to jailbreak it today using the instructions on this link: iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS on OS 3.0.x Using RedSn0w (Windows)

After I pressed shift+restore on itunes to restore it to the ipsw file listed on that site, I got this error message - "This device is not eligible for the requested build."

I searched for that message on these forums and found a couple of threads about the same problem. They both said that restoring from itunes won't work anymore for earlier os's.

Should I just skip that itunes part and go straight ahead to jailbreaking the phone with redsnow, since I'm still on OS 3.0?

    Thanks.

    Yep.

There are a LOT of tutorials out there that need to be updated and have the step to restore in itunes removed.

Cant see real well tonight sorry if this is not helping but it sounds like you are tying to restore 3.0 onto a 3GS phone. Apple is no longer signing this. Keep reading, I don't have a solution but I can assure you apple wont sign that and unless you backed up some stuff from your phone and edited the host.etc file to trick the signature process its not going to work. Sadly most stuff in this world is dependent on the operating system you are using. How about tell us what you got ?
