Making the iphone 3g 3.0 faster
Hey guys,
I just accidentally found a way to make the iphone 3g faster after upgrading to 3.0 firmware.
I upgraded my iphone 3g from 2.2.1 to 3.0 a few months ago and it was running so slow. Playing Need for Speed was a nightmare, after a few races, I would have to restart the application or do a hard restart of the iphone. Playing Monopoly or BeJeweled2 was pretty slow as well.
Just right now, I installed a theme called "illumine" thru cydia, and all of the sudden the iphone was running pretty quick again. I tried all of the applications, and none gives me problems so far. I'm so thrilled right now. I can't explained how it fixes the lagging problem. All I know is my iphone is running pretty fast again, and that's all i care. Recommend installing Winterboard first before installing "illumine", doing vice versa will not work. Try this at your own risk.
Anyhow, if you have updated to 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1, or 3.1.2 and experiencing the lagging problem, then try the "illumine" theme and tell me if it helps or not. I don't have os 3.1 or 3.1.2, so I don't know whether it works or not for those os.
Man, I wished I have discovered this 2 months ago to save myself countless hours searching the web and forums trying to solve this lagging problem. Needless to say, I restored my iphone from 2.2.1 to 3.0 and back to 2.2.1 like ten times. I can't believe installing the "illumine" theme fixed the lagging problem, I still can't believe it was that easy. I hope this thread helps someone with their iphone 3.0 lagging problem.Last edited by time3993; 10-18-2009 at 08:26 PM.

It was probably a cache issue. Installing a theme will not do anything for your memory except slow it down, unless it modifies your launch daemons which could potentially be harmful. Modding the LaunchDaemons yourself, however, could be a useful way to free memory. Tell me what source this theme is on. I'll look through the files to see if it modifies your system or if installing it just cleared your cache.

I'm very curious of whether it modifies my systems or cleared the cache. All I know it makes the phone way faster than before. Please advise.
The source is from ModMyi, the theme is "illumine", installed thru cydia. Thanks
oh, one more thing, I first tried it on my iphone, already have winterboard installed, then installed illumine theme.
I then tried it on my friend's phone, did not have winterboard installed, but it also made the phone run faster after installed illumine theme. Then he decided to installed winterboard, and all of the sudden it runs slow again, just as slow as before he installed the winterboard. So I don't think it's a winterboard issue. I tried to remove illumine theme and reinstall, still lagging. So I have to do the whole restore back to 3.0 and redo the whole process again, and it run pretty fast now. I don't know if this help with your investigation or not, just to let you know what I know.Last edited by time3993; 10-20-2009 at 07:57 PM.

Look it up in iFile. Just go to /var/stash/themes.xxxxx/illumine.theme/ and see if we have anything besides .PNG's in there.

List the files in bundles and post Info.plist.
