How to jailbreak iPhone 3G 3.1.2 using blackra1n
Ok so I've seen a lot of posts about people being stuck on running or entering recovery when using blackra1n with the 3G, so I decided to post how I do it. I jailbreak a lot of iPhones for my co-workers and friends. So far I have used this process to jailbreak over 20 3G iPhones in the last week. So here it is step-by-step.
Make sure iTunes is not set to open automatically when your iPhone is connected.
Make sure your iPhone is connected to your computer and close iTunes.
Open blackra1n.
Note: Do not Run as administrator or Run in compatibility mode.
Click Make it rain, your phone will get stuck in recovery and blackra1n will say "running"
Press and hold the power and home buttons together.
Release both buttons as soon as your iPhone screen goes black.
blackra1n will say the jailbreak is done, but it isn't, close blackra1n
Open blackra1n and click Make it rain
blackra1n will say "waiting on phone"
Press and hold the power and home button on your iPhone.
The Apple logo will appear, keep holding the buttons, the screen will go black and then the Apple logo will appear again.
When the Apple logo appears the second time, release the power button but continue to hold the home button.
Your phone will finish restarting, but geohot will appear.
Release the home button and wait for blackra1n to do it's thing.
Hope this helps some people out.

This helped out a lot. It got stuck for me too, while doing my friend's 3G. It was weird. I did BOTH my 3GS perfectly but it stalled on this one. Great post and thanked!
Nothing beats the iPhone.

Ok, so it can be hard to troubleshoot when you aren't physically here, and can't answer questions as I as them, but here goes.
First thing you have to ask yourself is, does iTunes recognize my iPhone? If it does, then then problem probably isn't with your phone. Next are you positive the phone is on 3.1.2, go to settings/general/about and look at version. Next, is iTunes definitely closed, check the system tray, check your task manager, stop the bonjour services all that. Right click on blackra1n and pick properties, have you ensured that your not running in a compatibliity mode, and not running as administrator. Open blacra1n.log and post the contents of one of your attempts here, so I can see which command your phone is getting stuck on. Finally I would delete blackra1n and download it again if nothing else has worked for you. Hope this helps.

This worked for me. It seems Blackra1n has problems putting the iPhone 3g in DFU mode.

Thank you!!!
Thank you so much! I've tried this method for almost a week now and this is the only way that I have been able to jailbreak my 3G! I even tried using PWNAGETOOL 3.1.4 with no success! You should post this on a bunch of the other sites that people have been posting "fixes" that don't work!!!

Hi there, good post but I have a problem.
From this point
blackra1n will say "waiting on phone"
"Press and hold the power and home button on your iPhone.
The Apple logo will appear, keep holding the buttons, the screen will go black and then the Apple logo will appear again." My screen goes off but not back on
I also get the itunes and usb logo here
When the Apple logo appears the second time, release the power button but continue to hold the home button.
My iphone will not reboot and i dont get the Geohot at all
Your phone will finish restarting, but geohot will appear.
Release the home button and wait for blackra1n to do it's thing.
I have now tried 3 times and still no joy. please please help.

How long are you holding the buttons for? It should take a little bit, and you have to hold them both together for the whole time, if you release one early it won't work

A rather important note for ALL iPod Touch 2G users. This is where I had trouble.
Go into settings>general>about and look at your model number. If your model number begins with MB, you're good. IF YOUR MODEL NUMBER BEGINS WITH MC, BLACKRA1N WILL NOT JAILBREAK YOUR IPOD. Just wait for the Dev team to release a jailbreak. Don't spend hours trying to jailbreak it like I did.

I'm having the same problem as daveo72. I go through the steps, but instead of the screen going black and the Apple logo appearing the second time, I get the iTunes/USB screen. When this happens, blackra1n gets stuck on "running" again.
I've gone through it about eight times so far, each with the same result. I've made sure not to let up on either button. I hold them about 10-15 seconds for the first Apple logo to appear, then keep holding, but still get the iTunes/USB screen every time.
Any ideas?

Didn't work for me either, who knows might just be for 3Gs. Was looking forward for this to come out. Congrats on the new jailbreak looking for more options to choose from. Looks like a nice program.

Did you try turning Bonjour services off? Also make sure that you are NOT running as administrator or in compatibility mode. This is for the 3G, blackra1n works just fine for 3GS.

3G 3.1.2 8gb black
I've had the same problem with black rain from restart.. I tried about 15-20x before i was gonna give up .. Try closing Bonjour services off and all other Itunes affiliates. then repeat from where your phone get stuck on itunes/usb , hold power/home, then restart black rain, "make it rain", then turn on phone and hold power/home, the second apple logo shows then let go of power.. this process seems to hit and miss maybe i got lucky but it eventually worked for me
Hope this helps

I finally got blackra1n to work using this method but I did do somethings different I'm only going to mention these things. First I created a new used and gave it limited access. Then logged on the new user and plugged in my iPhone. After iTunes booted up I went into task managed ( cntl + alt + del) in the processes I ended iTunes and iTuneshelper then followed the instructions. After about 4 hours I was getting tired and accidently pushed just the power button for a couple of seconds released it then instantly pushed both power and home just as the instructions say to do. Hope this helps someone else.
