is 3.0 firmware worth the risk?

I bought a 2g iphone from ebay a couple of weeks ago, and it had a problem where it would show no service all the time, i couldn't get a signal anywhere. After about 4 days of trying different tutorials to get it to work, i eventually got it working on the 2.2.1 firmware just by some miracle!!i tried about 6 diferent firmwares between 1.0.2 and 3.0...i don't even remember how i got it working now, i think it was coz i was running it on an O2 payg sim so the phone wouldn't unlock properly or something.

Now i'm wanting to run the 3.0 firmware, but i'm worried that my phone will show no service again.

So my question is, is it worth risking it upgrading to 3.0 firmware, or is the difference so little that i may as well stay on the 2.2.1 firmware?I really don't want to end up spending a week trying to get it to work again lol.

What risk? There's a jailbreak and unlock for 3.0
