iPhone 3GS iBSS iBEC
So there's a new post on the Dev Team Blog telling us to get the iBSS and iBEC. I have two questions about this...
1. Do you still have to do this if you got the ECID and put it into purplera1n and got the file. The Dev Team is telling us to get TWO files using the restore method but I only got 1 file from purplera1n. I'd rather not do a restore so I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me if I'm good to go with my purplera1n generated file.
2. Are you screwed if you don't get this before 3.1 is released even if you don't upgrade to 3.1?

In response to your question #2: We don't know yet. We haven't been through an actual firmware update to know. Apple can "turn off" older iBEC and iBSS at any time, but we don't know if they will after an update.

I followed the procedure and was able to successfully get the 2 files they talk about:
iBEC.n88ap.RELEASE.dfu and iBSS.n88ap.RELEASE.dfu
however, I found both of these files in the second temp folder I copied (during the DFU Restore)
none of the 2 files were found in the temp folder I copied during the first restore. There was no DFU folder in the first temp folder obviously...hmmm ?
what was the purpose of the first temp folder ???
thanks in advance!Last edited by monica_69; 07-02-2009 at 12:49 AM.

I've tried numerous times, but I can only get the iBEC file. I have the full USB dump and purplera1n file. Is that enough? Do I still need to get the iBSS file as well?
The first temp folder only lasts a fraction of a second. I can "copy" it, but by the time I "paste" it, it's gone.

Man, I can't believe how convoluted jailbreaking and unlocking has become. I really hope in the end it turns out to be easier. I remember before yellowsn0w came out they were warning for months not to upgrade the baseband and in the end everyone could unlock.
I really hope someone gives me a definitive answer though as to whether it's necessary to go through this new restore process if you already have the file from purplera1n.

OK. I think I'll try that method. However, I have another question lol. It concerns backup/restore using iTunes. I have never done a restore from a backup. What I want to know is if I backup using iTunes and then restore will I keep my
1. Settings
2. Text Messages
3. Notes
4. App/Game Save Files
5. Photos in Camera

Wouldn't want to lose my progress in Hero of Sparta or Sally's Spa LOLOL Don't judge me please hahaha.

OK, I have done the manual process, and the automated "Grabber" program in DFU mode. I never get the IBSS file, only the IBEC file. Hopefully that and ECID and I am ok.
If anyone knows why I might not be getting the IBSS file, please let me know. Very frustrating restoring like 6 times in one night

After 8 times of trying to get the ibss file I finally found out what I was doing wrong. Make sure you are in DFU mode and not recovery mode. Your iPhone screen should be black when it is restoring and NOT the screen with the itunes picture. Now when you grab the first folder that appears in the temp directory (3 seconds to grab it), the ibss file should be there. Another thing I found out - if you do not actually want to restore your phone but just one the files, then plug out the usb cable right after you grab the folder. Your OS should still be in tact. Just hold the power and home buttons to restart the phone.
