Do I need OS 3 on unlocked/jailbroken 1G/2G iPhone?

I see I've got software version 2.2 and that the newer version offered in iTunes is 2.2.1....... but for some reason I haven't gone there. Maybe it's because everything is working just fine as is. I've got a video recorder and a voice message-taker and a few other things. So, question: why would I need to upgrade to OS 3? What are the advantages and disadvantages for me and my iPhone?

Look up the new features of 3.0 and decide if its worth upgrading.
