    Lightbulb is it possible to...

backup my jailbroken iPhone 3G...restore it to factory condition (so I can have apple fix my messed up battery)...then jailbreak it again and have everything (cydia apps, etc and all data) the way it was before restoring to factory?

What you would do is follow all the instructions to backup then restore your iPhone to stock condition in itunes. Stop there and take it to Apple. When you get it or a replacement back- you can restore the firmware in itunes then re-jailbreak and copy back all your backed up stuff.
