if you downgrade back to 2.2.1 i know the baseband will remain updated, but will you still be able to use the phone capabilities once back on 2.2.1?

It is totally worth upgrading. You can go straight to beta 2

It depends on if you are willing to put up with Beta software. Some people have had no problems but more seem to be downgrading again.

If you use YellowSn0w do NOT upgrade. If you are not bothered if your phone is stable and are willing to use potentially buggy software then it's up to you.

I need my phone to much to try it. i'll wait until the official release.

Just because you haven't had problems doesn't mean others won't. That's the joy of Beta software, it hasn't been tested with everything.

The only reason I'm testing Windows 7 is because I have access to Microsoft who look into any problems I report, that's what beta testing is for. There will be problems, not for everyone, but unless you can get them fixed I would not use Beta s/ware.

At the same time there is no reason to scare people off from trying the betas. Most people who have had problems since beta 2 are due to problems with in incompatible packages. You are correct that if you are the kind of person who wants a finished, polished product and does not want to put up with little glitches then you should not mess with the betas. I have found the new beta 3 to be faster and more reliable than when I was on 2.2.1.

Broken silent switch. Downgrade before Genius Bar appt?

Hey... So my silent/vibrate switch broke off of my iPhone 3G (from what I've read this has happened to many). I'm still under warranty (kinda sorta) but I've jailbroken it in the past and am now on OS 3.0 beta 3.

.....Issue is I'm activated as a device on another dev's account. Does anyone know if the "fine" folks at the Genius Bar will care that I've updated to beta 3, but not under my own name??

I'm hoping they'll just replace the phone as is, but should I try to downgrade to 2.21 first or erase any traces of a past jailbreak? I'd rather not risk problems downgrading the OS if Apple is willing to replace it regardless of the beta firmware.

Thanks, Your help is much appreciated!

((Oh, and yes I know I'm not "technically" under warranty since I've jailbroken , but I did buy my phone from Apple less than a year ago...duh, it's a 3G.))

On iPhone 3G, OS 3.0 beta 3.

Actually, at the Apple Store they asked if I was a developer. I told them I was and they didn't ask any further questions, but he warned me that I should know that if I had ANY sort of software issue on a 3.0 beta FW that they couldn't help me...AT ALL. However, since my problem was merely a hardware defect (silent switch broken) that they were going to replace it. I did notice a curious look when he was watching something (I'm guessing their analyzing utility log).

So, I'm happy for now with my replacement/refurb until it gives me issues. But for now I'm happy and never had a problem with my phone for nearly 9 months, through a couple jailbreaks and OS 3.0 betas. For the record, I did "erase all content and settings" then restore the 3.0 beta 3 before heading to the Genius Bar.

Thanks for the reply anyhow.

I had the exact same issue. The ******* there said he couldn't even look at it because it wasn't released to the public yet and I told him I was a dev. My vibrate switch is broken too. What does the firmware have to do with a hardware defect? Just to be safe the next Apple Store I go into I downgraded to 2.2.1.
