Tiny Umbrella or any other software / utility does not enable true DFU mode. DFU requires the power button. There is no way around it. What you're likely getting is recovery mode - and this will work in certain circumstances. Custom firmware restore requires DFU.

Im hoping someone could please help me, because Im stuck between a rock and a hard place. yesterday I was changing a friends LCD screen on his ipod 4 ios 4.1 before he goes over seas on holidays, but while doing it I accidentally ripped the Power Volume Flex Ribbon Cable.
So I'm trying to use the method posted by dejawoo, but all it does is open the folder located in C drive. so I then tried the following command "c:/dfu/dfu/iBSS.m68ap.RELEASE.dfu” by adding a /(forward slash between dfu and iBSS but windows wont recognize the file, and asks me to select a program to open it. does anyone know what I'm doing wrong, because I'm following this guide strep by step and cant work out why it wont run.
Im trying to put the ipod 4 iOS4.1 into dfu mode so I can jailbreak it and then he can reboot etc via sbsettings, until the new ribbon arrives.

s_Looking for iPhone
USBMuxListenerCreated: No error
I think it ran the dfu.exe file instead.
And if I try unpacking it to c:/dfu/dfu same thing as before it will only open the folder.
Im baffled as to why it wont work, its not like its a difficult guide to follow.

It looks like you're starting the dfu program. iTunes may need to be reinstalled.
The same command can executed by typing:
cd /dfu (or the directory where you extracted the files)
I don't/won't use this method because most devs say true dfu can not be initiated by software.

thats what I have been reading, on a few different forums, but after seeing the guide here I thought maybe it would work.
I found another way, where you change the ispw file to zip, then extracting it & copying the "applelogo.xxx.img3" so you have 2 of the files, one named "applelogo.xxx.img3" and the 2nd named "copy - applelogo.xxx.img3" then you delete the "LLB.m**ap.RELEASE.img3" file and rename the "copy - applelogo.xxx.img3" to "LLB.m**ap.RELEASE.img3" then save the file back to ipsw and apparently you shift restore from itunes and it puts the ipod/iphone into dfu mode.
some say it works, but i dont know if I should risk it, because if it stuffs up I would be forced to upgrade to 4.3.5 and that would really cause headaches for me.

I've heard pros and cons. Seems like a lot of work and hassle to me.
A lot easier to fix a button that needs fixing anything

tthats my prob, he goes over seas in a couple days and I was repairing his lcd before he went. I have repaired heaps of iphones and ipods, and never had any issues until this one. I did order the power/volume ribbon cable but it wont arrive before he leaves. so I thought atleast he could use the ipod while over seas and when he gets back I would replace/solder the new ribbon back on. at the moment the iphone wont shut down, wont reboot and volume buttons are useless. so I thought if I could jailbreak it, at least he can use the thing and have no trouble restarting etc if it froze on him. ah boy what a headache
when you say pros and cons what are they, it wasnt hard editing the ipsw its all done but yeah dont know if its safe to do.

The pros: works, cons: it doesn't and now a restore is required.
If it were me .. take the safe route. Don't make a bad situation worse.

I guess he can just use the auto lock to put it to sleep, and its an ipod so he doesnt really need ring tone (it doesnt work anymore anyways) but ipod music etc he can still use the touch screen to change the volume for that. I guess the only prob is that if it freezes on him while on holiday, then he will have a problem, because he certainly cant reboot.
thanks for the advise.

Hey I was just advised by some one that maybe I could enter dfu via redsn0w ""just enter pawned dfu right now"" do you think that would do the trick.
EDIT: to enter pawned dfu I still need to use the power button

i swapped the LCD out and like you i ripped the power + sleep + volume buttons ribbon cable. I wanted to repair it but found out its EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO REPAIR IT. You have to solder the ribbon cable back to the mobo and the solder leads are about 1mm wide. and there's four of them. My pod is stuck in the tethered boot loop and I cant get it out. I wanted to try the method posted above, the one u cant figure out but now my ipods screen wont come up
Post your progress with the new ribbon cable if you dont mind

01-11-2012, 03:59 PM #37Need help to Jailbreak my Ipad 1 without using power button (busted for no reason)
Please anyone help me out Jailbreaking my Ipad 1. I currently have the IOS 5.0.1 and the reason I can't do it is because the power button is busted, therefore not making it possible for me to put the device in DFU mode. Please if anyone has an idea of how I could Jailbreak or put it in DFU mode without using the power button.

i know this thread is very old , but still, i was looking for the solution and i found it.
1 Download Blackra1n
2 make it rain * , its will not jailbreak your device if you are using a OS higher then 3.1.3 i think but this will put your device into recovery mode just plug it out. Its not jailbreaked, so you instal a version that is jailbreakable by blackrain.
3. Jailbreak your iphone using blackrain again. But now with the right version.
*If you have an Asl.DLL file missing put it in these folders:
Windows 32bit: CProgram Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
Windows 64bit: 64 Bit – CProgram Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
