Stuck in recovery, iTunes asking to restore

Sorry if this has been previously covered but I've looked everywhere and haven't been able to find a solution..

So I just downloaded iTunes 8 and it seems to have forced my iPod into recovery mode.. when I connect it, iTunes says I have to restore for it to work. But I don't want to lose all my music (or is it gone already??) - how can I
a) get out of recovery mode
b) not have to restore the iPod

I have Windows XP. I've tried iBrickr already, it didn't recognize the Ipod when connected..
