What are the issues of upgrading a jailbroken iPhone 2G from 1.1.4 to 2.2?
I have a jailbroken 2G iPhone running firmware 1.1.4 with lots of downloaded applications, and everything is kosher.
I was thinking of upgrading the firmware to 2.2 (the latest). Research on the net revealed that users *seem* to have encountered a lot of issues with the 2.x firmware, including:
1. Hanging at the boot logo/screen
2. Repeatedly rebooting without ever going past the apple boot logo
3. Vanishing EDGE settings
4. Inability to get past the "Emergency Calls" screen
5. Limited/fewer number of free applications available on 2.2 than 1.1.4
6. iPhone hangs/locks up when sliding the "Slide to Unlock" slider
Are there any more known issues? What are the real risks of upgrading to the 2.2 firmware?
I'd like to leave well enough alone, but I'm tempted by some of the newer apps that have appeared on the iTunes AppStore, and I can't acces the AppStore unless I'm using firmware 2.2.
Any ideas?
TIA.

i have just done this in the last few days myself
all worked perfectly using this guide:
http://www.modmyi.com/forums/general...n-windows.html
(with 2.2 file on page 13)
only issue is, i liked alot of the older apps which arnt compatible with 2.2, but ah well, cant have both new and old, worlds not perfect. lol
$50 itunes giftcard got me all the apps i will ever need and u also get installer and cydia automatically on ur phone aswell, so u can still get some free apps

All the issues you refer to stem from not following proper directions when going through the jailbreak process. All you have to do to avoid this is sync all your contacts to iTunes first. Next RESTORE (not upgrade) to firmware 2.2. Finally leave your SIM card in the phone and run Quickpwn 2.2 to jailbreak and unlock. Finally set the phone up as NEW in iTunes and resync your contacts.
As far as free apps you have hundreds more choices due to the App Store. There are also thousands of free apps in Cydia. What exactly can't you live without that you think you may lose?

Thanks Trooper and Poseidon79 for your replies.
When you say "Next RESTORE (not upgrade) to firmware 2.2"I assume you mean using the custom firmware 2.2 for the iphone classic that's posted on http://www.modmyi.com/forums/general...l#post2733291?
"What exactly can't you live without that you think you may lose?"
The urge to upgrade is more because of the newer apps on 2.2. Still, I've grown attached to some apps like iAwake2, AgileMobile, ToDoList2, CameraPro, ShowTime (Video recorder), VNSea, iBlackList, iTextUploader, weDict and VNotes (voice notes).

iBlacklist has a great version for 2.0+ but you have to repay for the app I think. Cycorder is a perfect video camera. There are lots of free todo lists and voice recorders on the app store. The app store also has integrated instant messenger clients. As for the rest i've never used them so I dunno...
When i say restore... i mean hit restore... as opposed to the "upgrade" button in iTunes.

think you have to hold shift + press restore, and it will bring up the filebrowser for you to select the firmware that u downloaded
try searching the appstore, before u upgrade, to see if all the apps are there that u want and if they are free or not (may be under a different name but same thing)

Yeah, I kinda got the restore part... I was worried about the veracity/stability of the custom IPSW file that Aws3ya created. I guess it's good, since a lot of people reported successfully having upgraded to fw 2.2 using that file.
Oh well.. here goes nothing... in for a penny, in for a pound.
I'll post the results here in a few hours.
After some difficulty (and 2 retries), I managed to upgrade to 2.2.
Now, when accessing the internet over the wireless, the iPhone has become *SO SLOW*, that I'm tempted... nay... *sorely* tempted to fling it across the room, preferably at something unyielding, like a wall.
Any suggestions or tips on what the problem could be?Last edited by kunalashar; 12-29-2008 at 06:54 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

The better fw file was what I first tried with. That didn't work (meaning that the jailbroken phone had quite a few issues with the EDGE network, wifi, Cydia, etc.).
I then shifted to the regular fw file, followed by a QuickPwn. Most of the errors vanished, except for (1) the wifi problem (2) the refusal of the AppStore app to connect (???even over EDGE) and (3) failure of synchronization using Outlook (outlooksync kept crashing on my PC).
Another restore+jailbreak+unlock fixed all the errors except the wifi's infuriating slowness. Just one other computer was on the wireless, and it's wasn't a bandwidth issue.
I did another jailbreak, and this time it refused to connect to my wireless ("Could not connect to <<wireless>>"). I had to reset the network settings, and now everything seems fine.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
(Nothing ever comes easy huh?)
My wifi problems turned out to be because of fw 2.2.
A post by a member on another forum mentioned that fw 2.2 has problems with wifi networks that use WEP encryption (apparently it's not even supported in fw 2.2).
I changed my wifi encryption to WPA2-PSK and viola! All the problems vanished. The wifi connectivity that had become shaky, unreliable and slow suddenly righted itself. And I didn't even have to reset my network connections, leave alone do another restore/jailbreak/unlock/reboot.Last edited by kunalashar; 01-02-2009 at 08:51 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

iPhone restored fm 1.1.4 to 2.2 ok but phone carrier not detected
Hi, i am new to tis site. Seeking IMMEDIATE aid in my iphone problem. I am sure my request isn't pertaining to this topic but i am desperate. My problem is that i have just made the jump by restoring my iphone 1.1.4 to 2.2 And following all the many tutorials did exactly as mentioned. My iphone is now at 2.2 Good!! Everything else works fine. But my phone signal has gone blank. It states "No Carrier", null. I am scratching my head as 2 what went wrong. HELP, pls. I depend on my hp every second of d day.
All i did was Shift+Restore on itunes 8 after backing up my iphone. D restoring went well. Then as d iphone rebooted it said tt i need a Sim card that doesn't require sim code. I hv all this while bn using my Country's Telco Co. sim. (Maxis telco, Malaysia. N it has bn fine with 1.1.4). So while still keeping tt Sim in my iphone, i keyed in my Sim code to unlock d Sim card. Somehow d iTunes doesn't recognise tt Sim card.
Next, i launched QuickPwn and did d necessary. Successful n d iphone launched with all d relevant apps. Installer and Cydia there. But my Phone Carrier states "no service". Can't make any calls at all. It's just not activating the Sim card. Please ADVICE, anyone. TQ TQ

the key to not losing edge carrier or wifi is very simple. It took me a while to figure it out. you MUST have your sim in when you use qpwn. So do a regualr restore than use pwn with sim in. good to go
