Need guidance with unlocking & jailbreaking 2g iphones

Let me apologize if some of my questions appear noob...the reason is that I am a noob.

I have 2 iphones that I need to unlock and jailbreak

iphone 1 - I bought used from some guy its a 16gb 2nd gen iphone. It seems that he had already unlocked it because I put in my t-mobile sim card and it started working! However I dont thinks its jailbroken because I dont see any app store. The version is 1.1.4.

iphone 2 - I just got this from apple - refurbished 4GB 2nd gen iphone.

Now I want to use both these iphones on T-mobile network and be able to download applications from app store.

Q1. I came across WinPWN & QuickPWN on these forums & the guides. are they the same?

Q2. I read on one of the pages here( State of the iPhone - ModMyi - Wiki) that 2.2 version cannot be unlocked and only be jailbroken so we should not upgrade to 2.2 but rather 2.1. Is this info correct? I got a little confused here/

Q3. Do I need an AT&T sim card to unlock my new iphone (iphone 2)?

Q4. Do I need to follow the same steps for unlocking & jailbreaking both these cellphones?

Any help is appreciated. I read thru the forums and guides but got confused and need guidance.

Thanks!

1-Both of them are unlocking&jailbraking tools.Quickpwn is mostly used.
2- Unlock&Jailbrake is for OK for 2G 2.2
Jailbrake is also OK for 3G 2.2 but unlock is not possible yet.
3-Any simcard u can use
4-I understand just memories are different. So the same way...
*If ur writing is correct that both of them are 2nd gen(3G)...

Dejawoo, thanks for the clarification!

I was incorrect in stating that both are 2nd gen phones. They are not 3G but the older model so they are 1st gen iphones.

Quick question - I got stuck in the very first step of this process. I installed latest version of itunes, connected my refurbished out of the box iphone thru USB - but itunes screen shows me an activation screen with the following details -

Let's get started
1. Activate your iphone with AT&T
2. Register and get an itunes store account
3. Put your contacts.........

How do I bypass this screen to upgrade my firmware thru itunes before I use quickpwn to unlock & jailbreak it?

Thanks in advance!

Hold down power and home at the same time for about 20 seconds until you see the iTunes + USB cable on the phone. This is recovery mode. iTunes will then allow you to restore to 2.2.

Poseiden, My iphone already shows itunes +USB without holding the power & home button down. Maybe because this is an unused new phone w/o SIM?
However, in Itunes, I do not get an 'upgrade' option for this iphone. All I get is FAQ, option to activate using AT&T or cancel.

If I connect my other iphone which is already unlocked and I am using t-mobile sim in it, then itunes shows me the upgrade firmware option.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

The refurbished phone I got apparently came with an inserted at&t default sim. I inserted my tmobile sim card in its place and connected to itunes but this time itunes said 'invalid sim card' or something to that tune and again didnt give me an option to upgrade!

What should I try next?

Dejawoo,

Thats the exact link I am following
However, I never get the greyed out box option of upgrade Vs restore in itunes. So I am stuck at the very first step.

When I connect my iphone to itunes, I get the AT&T activation screen -see attachment.

And iphone shows itunes+USB symbol.

Please help!
