Odd error: Single short bar appears, no "No Service" message and no T-Mobile

Two 2g Iphones bought for my children, ATT refurbished phones.
I jailbroke / unlocked both of them last night. One works fine and the son is off happily. But the daughter's would not recognize the TMobile card.
Jailbreaking on a Mac tower with completely updated Leopard and ITunes (8.02).
I figured I must have messed up the jailbreak so I repeated. Have done a couple of times (restoring to 2.2 in ITunes, then Quickpwn. Can't use Pwnage because i keep getting the "I Haz fld" message).
Still no go. Here's what is weird.
1) With a complete restore, the ATT card installed, I get this logo in the upper left hand corner, five dashed lines the left most one is a slight bit thicker/higher. ITunes recognizes the phone and has the "Let's Get Started" window.
2) Now I run QuickPwn and go into DFU mode, again all seems fine because ITunes sees the phone in recovery mode. Sending 018-4378-1.dmg, sending kernelcache.release.s5l8900x, and "ihaz success". Various things going on the phone ...
3) And we're back up, everything looking good on the iphone but once again, those 5 little lines with one slightly thicker. No "No service" with the ATT Sim installed and no T-Mobile. It does recognize the phone number on the Sim but no TMobile.
It is not the sim cards because in my (working) Iphone, the ATT Sim shows "no service" and my T-Mobile sim works just fine.
Fixed it. Used Pwnage rather than Quickpwn. Not sure why how whatever but it now "sees" the ATT Card ("no service") and the TMobile card.
Weird but hey for $99 I cannot complain about a refurb 8 gb phone.
