iPhone 3G freezing, stuck at boot logo

iPhone 3G 16GB 2.2 firmware T-Mobile by VIRGINSIM

This is my third time restoring the firmware... I can't figure out what background applications (CYDIA) are conflicting.

these are the symptoms:

1) iPhone freezes at random times when it's locked (sleeping or lock screen). The phone does not react to touch or buttons, however it appears to be working in the background. It will receive messages and allow calls in the background, but phone's GUI is frozen, so it stays frozen, doesn't ring, vibrate, etc.

2) When it's frozen I force a hard reboot (sleep and home button) and the phone will stay stuck at the boot logo, display-wise, because I've realized the OS is partially running, it's detected by the PC, messages and calls are allowed, but again stays frozen, no ringing, vibrate, etc.

3) Eventually it will turn on, after like a dozen hard reboots. This happened in firmware 2.1 and now in 2.2 and I do reinstall the same jailbreak software. In 2.1 it was more annoying, as when it finally did boot, the lock screen would stay frozen for about 2minutes and then the spinning circle would appear and the phone would respring and work.

My current guess is that it's winterboard, quickgold, (call blockers like iblacklist and mcleaner, switched from one to the other), or an app that uses mobile substrate.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm going to turn off all themes in winterboard right now.

another idea too, is there an issue with auto lock?

yeh set up as a new phone than jailbreak than re-sync your contacts and stuff. do not use custom firmware because that is what is probably giving you the issues. id try a clean restore and see if the phone still gives you trouble while the phone is stock, if it still gives probables its prob a hardware issue and you would ned to talk to apple about that good luck

Thanks for the suggestion scream, those were my initial thoughts, but it's not custom firmware giving issues, as in 2.2 was the first time I used custom firmware and this issue has been present since 2.1 where I used stock firmware and quickpwn. On the other note, that can't be the source of the problem either, as I always do clean restores and never restore from backups (I use sync instead). That's why my guess was CYDIA apps...

but good news, I've disabled WINTERBOARD items, and the phone has not giving me any issues. It looks like one or more of the items in WINTERBOARD are conflicting. I'll post my results later on, I'm going to use the process of elimination and figure out which theme item is glitching. Hopefully this helps anyone having similar issues..

i know its a long process but if you turn off or remove all your apps and then re-install 1 at a time and see which one is giving you the issues.

It continued to experience the same symptom but less often.. it's weird. On my replacement 3G the same software loaded caused no problems. I'm guessing a hardware issue on the phone was causing certain software to go poop.

I restore my iphone again this morning, and only make the jailbreak, without putting any cydia app or frpm the apple store and I have the same problem I got stock in the apple boot screen, even without the jailbreak does that, so that is a hardware problem right?
