Default New to jailbreak and the iphone. Can I ask some newb questions?!

I'm sure you get 10 million of these post and I am sorry to even post it up. I know sometimes this is frowned upon but if I am going to do this I want to make sure I understand things. Also I am wanting to ask these questions in part because I am not certain the answers will be the same in some of the guides since they are for previous firmware.

So, I purchased my iphone 10 days ago (new) and it is through AT&T. I DID upgrade to 2.2 (darn it!)

    I am on Windows OS.

    1) I saw a guide for 2.2 jailbreak for OS X but not Windows. Am I not able to jailbreak at this time since I have 2.2 and Vista OS?

    2) I see ppl stating they cannot make calls now and such. Are these ppl with unlocked phones? Do I need to be worried if mine is thru AT&T?

    3) What is DFU mode? I see this mentioned all the time

    4) I have read this over and over and want to make sure I understand this:

"DO NOT USE QUICKPWN if you want to have a potential software unlock on your 3G iPhone anytime soon. QuickPwn will update your baseband to the new one included in the 2.2 update. This == bad. Use PwnageTool to create a custom 2.2 firmware. OS X guide will be up soon.

ONLY UPDATE TO 2.2 WITH PWNAGE TOOL AND A CUSTOM IPSW if you want a 3G unlock. If you update with the official .ipsw or the regular "update your firmware" that pops up in iTunes, or you use QuickPwn - your baseband just got updated, which means NO software unlock anytime soon.

DO NOT USE QUICKPWN and ONLY UPDATE TO 2.2 WITH PWNAGE TOOL AND A CUSTOM IPSW if you want to be able to unlock your 3G soon. Just saying it again so you can't say we didn't tell you. "

Is the only caution I am to be concerned about here is that since I have 2.2 already installed and if I use quickpwn to jailbreak then my phone can never (most likely) software unlock? And by software unlocked you mean this phone could not be used with another carrier other then AT&T? If so why is that such a big deal? The only thing I can think of is if I want to sell it late. Oh well? If not what do you mean by software unlock?

    5) What is baseband?

I guess the last question I have at this time would be comparability. For those that jailbreak have you ran into issues with itunes/app store/default stuff on the iphone? I guess anything that you can thing of as a side effect? I really want to do this as there is some apps out there I really want but then I am also skeptical now after reading that long post in iphone news forum. Seemed to be a lot of issues.

Thanks for all your help. I'll pick this up fast but just need some help initially. Heading to bed, hope to find some good news tomorrow

    1. Using QuickPWN, the method is pretty much the exact same. The whole jailbreak process is shown to you while jailbreaking in QuickPWN [step by step instructions]

    2. People not being able to make calls, most likely is just their personal phone being faulty.

    3. DFU mode is a recovery mode, you put it in this mode if you're experiencing problems and want to "un-jailbreak" your phone and get it back to it's full factory settings. [plug the phone into the computer - turn the phone off while it's plugged in - hold down the power and home button until the apple logo pops up - then release the power button but remain holding down the home button until it shows that your phone is in recovery phone on the phone]

    4. Yeah that's just important if you plan on unlocking your iPhone 3G on another carrier other than AT&T, if you plan on remaining on AT&T then don't worry about this.

    5. Couldn't answer that, it has to do with unlocking the phone to other carriers. I'm on AT&T.

There is no side effect on jailbreaking at all, you can only 'better' your phone with it jailbroken. The only thing you will notice is a little bit of lag if you install Winterboard and theme up your phone, which is bare able to most people. To me though, I decided to remove Winterboard because I prefer a quicker/snappier phone rather than a slight lagged cool looking phone. But other than that, doesn't effect the phone at all, and if you do experience any problems you can always put it into DFU mode and restore it back to the same phone you first turned on when you purchased it [un-jailbroken].

Dizzy thanks for the information. Is there a place I check out Cydia or do I need to jailbreak in order to use this? To my understanding this functions like the App Store right?

Where is the quickpwn guide for Windows OS? The one I saw for 2.2 firmware was for Apple OS only.

Last if I need to use DFU mode will that erase my contacts? The only concerns I have is my contacts. I need to find a way to export them or something if they can be lost.

bhz1 I'll check out that link now, thanks

edit: Sorry I wanted to also ask about that theme you mentioned. Is that the only way to theme your phone?

edit 2: According to this page the 2.2 firmware for the 3g phone does not work with 3rd party apps yet. Is this true? If so then I guess I need to wait until it's working? Again, Cydia is where i would get these 3rd party apps right? Here is link I am referring to:

here's a reliable list, iphone-dev site, iclarified site.

baseband is a radio that connect to gsm network, u have a gsm phone, which use a sim card
other phone doesn't use a sim card, use a cdma technology. which the network right now is cdma 2000

gsm network use edge(2g) and also some use 3g
    cdma 2000 use evdo (2g-3g) evdo rev A (3g-3.5g)

the baseband is factory locked to a network, where iphone it sell to
usa iphone is locked to att, euro some is locked to some other carrier. and asian country iphone is factory unlocked.

best way i tell u, where i learn everything is read and read, and google and google. i done over 100 iphone 2g, and over 20 3g phone. i also modified 2g like apple light up logo for the back, replacing battery, glass, digitzer, lcd. powder coated case. for 2g, and did a few case replacement for 3g. (not a phone protector, actually take a iphone apart replacing the factory case) and all this just read from google.
thanks to modmyi, iclarified, and of cuz iphone dev team.

u will screw up the first couple try, but just a process of it. we all here to help so feel free to post here.

and for 3g third party app, i'm not sure, i have not done one yet, but i done few 2g phone already, i don't see what will be the different. 2.2 work perfect on 2g unlock/jailbreak
    cydia work 100percent.
    winterboard work
    app share work
    boss pref work
    time capsule work
    theme work.
so i think it'll work for 3g but i may be work, i be update a 3g pretty soon i let u know.

Thanks. The baseband no longer concerns me since I am not changing carriers, but thanks.

I see a lot of mod talk that references either 2G or 1st gen iphones and/or OSX. None of which relate to me. I have a 3G iphone that I want to jailbreak so I can install a few apps that are not on the app store. Mainly and most important is iblacklist. So basically I just need to know if I can jailbreak my phone and get apps for it since I did the firmware update that apple released. I see a lot of ppl stating they upgraded to 2.2 fw and have no issues but they used a modded fw not the one straight from iTunes/Apple. Being a day late on all this stuff I made the mistake of updating to the stock 2.2 fw!

So once i know for a fact I can use quickpwn tool in Vista with a 3G iphone with the stock 2.2 fw in iTunes 8 and be successful in that and getting apps I will give it a go. Has any one done exactly what I just mentioned?

The only reason you would need a custom FW is if you plan on changing carriers, which in your case isn't a problem so the stock FW is just fine. blog.iphone-dev.org/ Go there and scroll down and you'll see a link to download QuickPWN for Windows, the process is the exact same between Windows and Mac. I, as well as probably almost everyone here on AT&T with an iPhone 3G, updated to 2.2 FW in iTunes then loaded up QuickPWN and jailbreak the phone. You really don't need instructions on the process, because QuickPWN tells you step by step what to do while you're doing it. The only thing I could tell you in my first jailbreak experience, is that on the last step of holding down the home button, you don't have to hold it down throughout the entire process, when it tells you to release the power button and hold down home for 30 seconds I think it is, once that sentence goes gray and pauses the 30 second countdown, you can release home and watch QuickPWN do it's magic and walla, you're done. And about the contacts, you're contacts will be stored on your computer [Windows Address Book] that's where your contacts are synced every time you sync your phone. So when you put your phone in DFU mode and restore it, yes you lose everything, but as soon as you load your phone back into iTunes you can restore it from the last back up, and even if you don't restore it from the last back up and you set it up as a new phone, you can still sync your contacts on the fresh empty phone.

What is "window" contacts? Can I view these on my computer? I just sync with windows contact because it was default to outlook, which I do not use any way. When I sunc it stated that 5% of my contacts on my computer would be changes. Have no idea what it meant but I allowed it.

    I DID IT!

LOL I was so nervous! That was fast and easy! Took like 3 minutes and done!

    So questions, questions questions!

    First what is "INSTALLER"?

Second, what are the must haves?

EDIT: ok i just tried to install iBlacklist and I got this error when I hit the install button: 1 Broken packages. The following packages have unmet dependencies: iBlacklist

What does this mean? Is there something else I need to install first to install this?

well for all the iphone i done i always unlock it, either is att or other carrier, a unlock phone worth more money in the market, if u ever plan on selling it. so trying not to update your baseband is a smarter decision, but if u plan on keeping the phone till it die, then go for it.
(plus u can always unlock it in the future, i just think u would have to wait much longer then the unlock iphone dev fixing to release soon)

when he say windows contact(all you phone number, contacts on your phone is sync under that folder)

installer and cydia is a third party installer.
it host all the apps for u to choose from but cydia been taking over
installer only have 8 percent apps cydia have it all. and becoming the most popular one.
u can also add source and increase more selection of apps.

there's a few source i highly recommend but i can't post it here.

mcleaner (better then iblacklist, but iblacklist and mcleaner is a demo, u have to pay for it)
boss pref( must have) click on more on right hand corner on boss pref
and click disable apple kill switch.
winterboard well if u want to customize theme
    aptbackup (backup your cydia apps)
wifi toggle switch (fastest way to turn off/on wifi to save battery life)
    cycorder(video camera)

just look thu cydia, it app tell u what they do.

    there's some really cool apps
u can remote access your computer, using wifi network.
    mcallshow
    mim
    chornus....

    have fun

Thanks rx7, I actually downloaded all that last night before bed with the exception of winterboard and aptbackup.

I was able to d/l iblacklist last night (it just worked after awhile), however I did also install mcleaner. I am not sure which one is better. cheaper price is better in this case?

I was browsing all types of themes and such and it seems almost all of them require winterboard to run them. Is there not themes and such that work with out this addon? Dizzy mentioned it slowed down his phone, I am not a fan of hangs either but I would like to customize! Any other solutions here?

theres a patch for iblacklist and mcleaner, for free. but i won't post it here, thats something u have to research. and learn. i heard iblacklist, take a very long time to get password for it after u paid. i am not sure that's the case. but i highly suggess ppl to pay for their app.

and i heard smirly sms. does picture mail. but i am not sure.
picture mail is a thing iphone don't have, u have to use email.

as for winterboard, i really don't notice it slow down the phone. but all iphone jailbroke or not, have the same problem. its not perfect.

just think about it, u got a simple firmware, then u decide add some cool stuff to atract customer, then u got little issue, so u fix some, then add more cool stuff. thats 11 firmware later. it's going to have a problem.
i am sure there be 2.2.1 coming out soon, lol. best way to do is try it out 1 app at a time, see how it feel, and see if thats what u need. u can always uninstall it at anytime. so. good luck
