APTBackup disapointment and fix...
Well so far I have not had any luck what-so-ever in using aptbackup it didn't work on the wifes iPod or on my phone
I just get the "Restore can only happen after a backp had been preformed and the Bla Bla Bla"
Hmm Seems to me I FRICKING DID THAT! Well at lest the app is free, even tho it was a waist of time......
To save you some reading, this is one possible fix:
I accept no responsibility for your actions in following the below instructions, do so at your own risk!
This was MY fix that does NOT mean it will work for you and of corse running commands (any commands for that matter) thru a SSH terminal on you phone could be DANGEROUS!!!
The how to:
I did this in WinSCP.
Before you do the below info:
Check and make sure that these files:
aptbackup_dpkg-packages.txt
aptbackup_openssh.tgz
aptbackup_cydiasources.tgz
Are in: /root/private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences
I suggest to copy: aptbackup_dpkg-packages.txt to your computer and open it (note pad or any text program will open it) once open make sure that those are the apps you want to reinstall.
IF NONE OF THE ABOVE FILES ARE THERE THIS WILL NOT HELP YOU!
..
Now:
Go to: root / applications (the whole address is: root /private/var/stash/Applications.)
Open: AptBackup.app
Select: Restore
RIGHT click on: Restore
Scroll down to: Custom Commands then over to Execute
Click: Execute
You most likely will get a warning screen: “this current session does not support bla, bla, bla do you wish to open a separate session."
Click: Yes
WAIT!!!! (it will seem like nothing is happening)
After 4 min. at most (mine took about 1.5 min) your phone should reboot with all the old Cydia apps on it..
This was MY fix that does NOT mean it will work for you and of corse running commands (any commands for that matter) thru a SSH terminal on you phone could be DANGEROUS do so at your own risk..Last edited by E-Dragon; 11-25-2008 at 08:27 AM.

Same thing happened to me. I did backup everything, well the list the application says it does, upgraded to 2.2, pwned it and ran the application again to restore my cydia applications. It says I have to do a backup first in order to work. Just waste of time.

You have to back up the phone, then install custom firmware, then do a restore of your backup in order to get it to work. He says it very clearly in his instructions and it works fine.

So then when I DID THAT it should of worked, but...... It didn't

I DID a BACKUP DID a RESTORE and still got NOTHING for my time and effort but a screen saying: "you must Bla,Bla,Bla...."
Hmm... Maybe I should waste my time and restore 5 more times just to make sure it is restored...Last edited by E-Dragon; 11-24-2008 at 10:25 AM.

Didn't work for me, either. It did work for me during a previous upgrade, however.

APTBackup...
I just did this last night. Perhaps you've done things in this order so I apologize if it's redundant. You must chose to restore in iTunes from you're most current iTunes backup. APTBackup stores it's application list in a location copied by the iTunes backup process. If you did an iTunes backup before you did an APTBackup backup the files will not be there. I have done this several times, and now with 2.2 last night, and it's worked like a charm each time.
i did:
1. back up with aptbackup
2. back up with itunes
3. restore with custom firmware
4. restore with itunes - THIS STEP MUST USE A PREVIOUS IPHONE BACKUP FILE WITH THE APTBACKUP PROGRAM LIST
5. restore (or attempted to) with aptbackup
Like I said, I don't want to treat anyone like they're daft, I just hope this helps.Last edited by Michael Coakley; 11-24-2008 at 11:12 AM.

Weird. It worked for me just fine. I don't think I did anything different from the above instructions.

restarting
When I used APTBackup, it restored my iPhone. At least I think so, But now the iPhone wont turn on. It just keeps "restarting" itself. Can only see the pineapple-logo. The iPhone also buzzez from time to time like it's connecting to iTunes. How do I fix this??

Who wants a fix for this? I know I did, so I found one whilst cursing under my breath, mumbling and frantically searching for a solution. In some cases, including mine and hopefully yours, aptbackup has worked, but the app is malfunctioning, pass as to why.
So if you use your favourite terminal/SSH interface to your phone, navigate to the aptbackup directory and then send "./restore" you may find everything starts happening :-D albeit slowly if you have a lot of apps.
I didn't work this out I found it whilst surfing, but feel free to thank me for passing it on ;-)

Hmm well you put me on the right track, that file helped point me in the right direction and I found a file with all my old app settings in it. The file was in: /root/private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences The file in there is: aptbackup_dpkg-packages.txt right where aptbackup is looking for it, BUT... iT still don't work, I guess you can say it half-***** worked. It did "save" the app list and put it back onto the phone, for whatever crazy reason the app is not finding it. And I'm still getting a "you must restore" For what ever reason the app doesn't recognize that the phone has already been restored
maybe I should restore 5 or 6 times till it figures it out LOL! But either way running the restore command thru the SSH termanial did work, so I guess the app has a bug in it *shrugs*
