iPhone bricked updating from 2.1 jailbroken to 2.2
I have a 8GB iPhone 3G, jailbroken 2.1 with QuickPwn. Today I tried to update via iTunes to 2.2. It went thru the backup process, downloaded 2.2, then BAM bricked my phone. Now what happens is, when I turn on the iPhone, first I see the pineapple, then a cartoon Steve Jobs speaking Russian. iTunes then says I need to restore my firmware. I says OK. iTunes says, "Extracting software," then logo on iPhone changes to the real Apple logo and iTunes says, "Preparing iPhone for restore...", then iTunes says, "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (2005)."
I have not been able to get the iPhone into any other mode using DFU key combo or other. Cannot get iPhone to reboot.
HALP!

DFU will work, your probably putting it into recovery mode...do this:
1. Itunes open, phone plugged in, phone turned off.
2. Hold POWER button for 5 seconds.
3. WITHOUT letting go of POWER, now hold HOME button for 10 secs, (both held).
4. Let go of POWER, continue to hold HOME button until Itunes recognizes phone (about 10-20 seconds)
5. Restore.
After that, BEFORE you sync anything to the phone, jailbreak it.
Then sync your stuff back.

restore it with another computer or try unplug your cable and move it to the back, u can restore to 2.1 or 2.2, but do remeber, using quickpwn will update your baseband, it will kill the chance for software unlock in the future, and also stop the fuction of sim adaptor if u update to 2.2, good luck.

When you do the restore try holding shift (windows) and click restore this will bring up a search for firmware to restore from, find iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw on your computer (guessing you already have it if not search and download it)then if you are successful use QuickPwn22.exe with the same firware as above and jailbreak again.
NOTE: They do warn that you may not be able to unlock the phone at a later date, if you only use AT&T I would not care.

Your instructions are very clear. But they don't work for me. When I hold the power button (step 1) the pineapple logo shows up pretty quickly (like 3 seconds). Then Steve Jobs appears before I've counted 5 seconds, and iTunes recognizes the iPhone before I've even pressed the Home button.
I'm using Mac OS 10.5.5.
I understand I won't be able to unlock this phone because I'm upgrading using QuickPwn, which is fine.
I have created a custom IPSW using PwnageTool 2.2.1, and I can choose to restore from it by holding Option when clicking Restore in iTunes. But it still fails with that 2005 error.
I'm totally stuck. I'm going to get my work laptop and try from Windows. Please post if you think of anything.Last edited by monkeyphone; 11-23-2008 at 10:37 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I am having the same problem after upgrading to 2.2, only difference is I get error code 6 most of the time and if it's in DFU mode with custom firmware I get 1600. I tried on my mac, pc, itune 8.2, 8.1, 7.7, 7.5. Still nothing can't restore it and boots to the steve jobs restore screen. Glad to see I am not alone here. If you get it working please let me know how

Install XP fresh and it'll work first time. No need to keep trying hundreds of different methods that will probably never work
