Help the newbie jailbreak please!

Ok, I have an iPhone 3g 8GB running 2.1 on AT&T. I have iTunes 8.01.11 on a Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I want to jailbreak my phone for the third party apps and themes but I'm not 100% sure how to do it. I've done some research and downloaded QuickPWN 2.1-1 because it looked like the simplest way to go. I don't care about unlocking my phone because believe it or not I like my AT&T service where I'm at.

My questions are (and feel free to laugh if you'd like, I'm a total hacking newb )
1. If all goes wrong I can still reset back to original factory settings and re-load a backup, right?
2. Is QuickPWN the simplest to use?
3. Will I still get the updates that Apple pushes? Will I have to re-jailbreak after them?

Any other tips or guide links would be very helpful. I think I've been to over 20 different iPhone hack/jailbreak forums in the last two days. Thanks!
