1. Jailbreak
2. Download OpenSSH and save SMS and callhistory into your local
drive
3. Restore your phone to factory
4. Setup as New
5. Jailbreak
6. Download OpenSSH and copy the local files you saved in step 2 and replace the folders in iPhone with your local ones
that shoudl do it =)

Hey All day..
I set the file AND the folder permission to 0777 and it's working smoothly =) thanks!
Also, another noob question.
I write alot of notes and have bible app with bookmarks of the verses that i like
if I would like to restore my phone to non-jailbroken state... is there any way for me to backup those notes and the bookmarks?
because it seems to me, ANY information (whether it'd be sms, notes, or app datas), following this guide, you HAVE to jailbreak again to get those information back. But what if you want unjailbreak but still keep those information you acquired after the jailbreak?
(I hope I'm making sense =))
could i just use 'back up iphone' from itunes and expect to save the information and retrieve it when i restore the phone from backup (after a clean restore)? or would backup of jailbroken iphone also back up the jailbroken sensitive information?
again.. I hope I'm making sense haha
Thanks so much!

If it's an AppStore application, I'm not sure if it will save; if it's thrid-party, it won't. If you do want to manually back it up, you can SSH in and find where the file is located, then copy it to your desktop/whereever for when you rejailbreak.
After would probably be best...

hehe, that's what I mean..
I will NEED to re-jailbreak to retrieve any information (contacts/sms/etc) I have acquired AFTER jailbreaking...
for example..
I have 100 contacts (before jailbreaking) I add 5 more contacts after jailbreak.
Is there a way for me to retrieve that 5 contacts AFTER restoring my phone to NORMAL? (without jailbreaking, again)
So in short, is there a way for me to backup/save those information (non third party app.. just regular iphone stuff, contacts/sms/notes) I made after jailbreaking, so I could retrieve it even after I restore the phone to non-jailbroken state?
Hence, I mentioned about 'back up' in iTunes.. would using backup option in iTunes during jailbroken state save the data in the phone? or would that also save some quickpwn stuff that's embedded in the phone?..
sorry for the bother but really appreciate the help! Thanks~!

Completely missed your meaning the first time... No bother at all.
Yeah, you can use the backup in iTunes to backup your stuff even when jailbroken, however I'd suggest removing a few of the "big" jailbroken things, like 5 Icon Dock/Rows, as these can cause your backup to be corrupt. The less third-party stuff when you backup, the better.
Some of your jailbroken folders/files will remain if you restore from that backup, but there's no real way to see them unless you rejailbreak and look through SSH.Respect your elders.

lol i had already restored and jailbroke when you answered my question.

Thanks =)
I tried and it did seem to work
but for some reason.. notes weren't adding new notes. maybe I didn't change the permission before backing it up. Strange.. and btw, that was what i was worried.. left over from jailbreaking...
do you happen to know what folders are made after jailbreaking?
I didn't install any third party app when I backed up.. obviously 'Cydia' was there but nothing else. would I be able to find the folders and delete them?
I sound very anal but when I want to restore.. I REALLY want to restore to normal, you know? haha
Thanks for all your help all day all week! =P
ps.do you know where the folders are generally put into when a third party app is installed?..for example.. I know chronus has 'Timecapsure' folder in the preference and a chronus folder in the 'library' but like an installed app on your pc, just by deleting the folders doesn't mean you 'uninstalled' the software.

The folders remain from whatever applications you had installed most of the time; they don't go away by deleting the application or even through a restore from backup.
These folders are everywhere depending on the type of application and the resources it required...
You can get rid of them if you restore and then set it up as a new phone.
And no problem, bud!Respect your elders.

What about the "Golden Rule?"
"GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone running 2.2 firmware and you want to keep your ability to use yellowns0w (or the option to use it in the future) do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool. ... Please DO not use QuickPwn if you want to unlock your iPhone 3G."
(found at rival forum QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 for iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 Released for Windows - iPhone Hacks)
I see this procedure was written in Oct 08, before 2.2 f/w and Pwnage Tool 2.2.5. Can One1 or anyone else verify or point me to an updated thread where somebody says it's safe to use QuickPwn on Unlocked 3G?

great work
This works like a charm. just updated a friends 3G to 2.2.1 on carrier. contacts, call history. Good stuff.

Update: I updated my girlfriends 1st gen to 2.2.1. Picked everyhing back up but I think it is having the permission issue. She can't delete emails or add to her calender. Going to look at her phone tomorrow. Hope for the best don't want to restore. I'll let you know how it goes.Last edited by mastaq1; 02-11-2009 at 05:47 PM. Reason: Update

I just sync contacts, calendar and bookmarks in iTunes. It doesnt matter if some items are added before or after the jailbreak. Everythign will still synk normally. Fort things like SMS messages, Weather locations, Stocks, clock settings or most third party apps, install Chronos from Cydia. You can then SSH the /mobile/Library/Preferences/Time Capsule folder to your desktop as a back up All you need to do is reinstall chronos after restore and SSH that folder back then restore the backups from within Chronos.
A point to mention, after you restore an iPhone, the first time you re-sync your contacts/calendar/bookmarks/mail stuff (the things that show up under the "info" tab in iTunes) you MUST scroll to the bottom of that page and make sure you check off the boxes that indicate copying everything from the desktop to the iPhone this sync only. if you dont, you will erase all the stuff off your computer. From that point on your iphone, whether jailbroken or not will sync normally. You would need to do this even if you were not jailbreaking the iPhone if ou restored firmware.
I learned early on in my jailbreaking 'career" that "update" or "upgrade" is not a good option. iphones work best with a fresh restore regardless of jailbroken or not. It cleans up the drive much as an occasional reformat and reinstall of Windows does for a PC.

Ok so I've sshed into my phone and I'm in the /User dir now... Is this the correct command syntax to copy the Library folder to a folder on my desktop called Library2?
cp Library /Users/Alticus/Desktop/Library2
Is that the right syntax? Or will that make a folder on my phone at /Users/Alticus/Desktop and copy it to my phone?

Odd but fixed
So I've fixed my girls phone. The permissions were correct but for some reason it wasn't happy. So I set the permissions recursively to 0777. Worked her email will update and delete now. As well as her calender is working again. Nothing else seemed to be messed up.
