Alright, alright. I'm gonna do this is the next couple of days.
What's the best way to back up everything? Does itunes do it for you? I know you can't backup cydia upps and such. But there's apps to save their settings, yes?

I guess I'll wait until after the 3G software unlock comes out on New Year's. I'm starting to notice definite lag on my iphone.

I want to do this but need some advice. I have a 3g running 2.2 on a custom ipsw. I don't need to pawn the custom firmware, right? Just copy the library files then restore to the custom firmware? That's it?

Okay, at the risk of making myself sound really dumb here. If I used quickpwn to originally jailbreak my 3G, am I really going to notice a speed up in app launching and such by doing this?

^Yeah, you should. Until you start installing tons of Winterboard themes again.

i just did this (like literally five minutes ago) and everything works great.
a few things i noticed:
1. even after i copied everything back to my phone, my contacts did not show up until i restarted my phone.
2. i was able to even keep the videos i had recorded with cycorder, all of my music, and my photos by copying those too, IMO, much easier than having to fight with itunes to get all of my music back on my phone.
3. for some reason i didnt get all of my text messages back, but i dont care much any way.
btw i did all of this with totalcommander incase you dont have wifi, or a mac.
EDIT: now that i have done this, itunes says it cannot read the contents of my iphone! wtf? do i really have to RE-jailbreak it all over again? maybe it is because i tried putting all of my music back on without going through itunes?Last edited by matdogg; 01-18-2009 at 08:15 PM.

i'm about to try this but here is my concern.. to everyone that has done this and seen improvements, just how long do the improvements last? because your phone will definitely be faster after a fresh restore and that'll last a little while, so is it that the method works or is it that the phone has been freshly installed? in otherwords does this eventually just slow back down to nothing????

hey =)
thanks for the great info.
I encountered an issue here.
I followed your steps. restored notes, mail, sms, contacts.. etc.
Everything is fine and dandy but when I try to download mail, write a new note, add a new contact...... after I click 'refresh/done/save' respectively.... it doesn't add the note, nor add the contact, nor get more message on the mail after the last message from the backup.
so, basically.. when I try to add on to the things that I have, it doesnt let me do it.. the old notes/contacts/mails are still there, but I just can't add anything newer to it.. =( (which defeats the whole purpose ... )
I tried rebooting but that's not working...
any thoughts?? thank you so much in advance!

^Yeah, this happened to me as well. It's just permissions errors; your permissions are most likely messed up for more than one thing. You need to SSH in and set them to 0755 or 0777.

ahh...
hey civic =)
I'm a noob too but I think I can help you out.
You must jailbreak your phone first in order for you to save your sms, contacts, mails, maps.. etc.
because after you jailbreak it, you download the software called 'openssh'.. or openssl. I forget.. haha through 'Cydia' ('Cydia' and/or 'Installer' are installed during your jailbreak process through Quickpwn)
and when you go into your folder systems in your phone, you can go to the directory One metioned (user/library.. which translates to priv/var/root/mobile/library..... something or rather.. I THINK! don't quote me. haha)
and you'll see folders "AddressBook", "SMS", "Mail".. and so on.
so AFTER you copy these folders.. (just copy the library folder to make your life easier) restore your phone to new.. setup as new... THEN jailbreak, again and copy the folders you just copied before and replace it in the phone...
and viola~ you have a clean (uncluttered) phone and you still have your old mails, messages, and stuff.
I know I didn't go into details.. but I hope it helped you to understand, at least a little =)
god bless!
I made the permission to be 0777 (apparently, that's the one with all access... and 0644 allowing only the owner have all the permission)
even with both 0755, and 0777 I cannot seem to delete or add anything to my contact/note/etc.
anythoughts??
Thanks again!Last edited by dkijc; 01-24-2009 at 12:11 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
