QuickPwn: iPhone 2G w/2.1 jailbroken but not unlocked

I have a first generation iPhone which i restored vie iTunes to firmware version 2.1. The original AT&T SIM card is still in the phone but shows no-service. I used QuickPwn to Jailbreak and supposedly unlock my iPhone. I followed the directions as specified and everything seems to have completed properly.

I now have a jailbroken iPhone. I can tell because I used Cydia to download BootNeuter 2.1 and install it on my iPhone. So far so good...

I then ran BootNeuter and set the settings as instructed: BL(4.6), Neuter(Yes), Unlock(Yes). Waited for process to complete...again everything seems good.

Now, I remove the AT&T SIM and put in a T-Mobile SIM. At this point the iPhone complains with "Different SIM detected please connect to iTunes".

I can make an "Emergency" phone call, but all other functions on the iPhone are disabled.

Is there a way to establish if an iPhone is unlocked with a software utility maybe?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The phone is not actually "activated". Easiest thing to do is download a custom firmware (2.1 unlocked/jailbroken) and use it in itunes. Shift-restore method.

I had same issue and I just went ahead and did that. Works perfect.

If you get an error in itunes let me know. I can tell you how to fix that too.

Quickpwn does not unlock and activate. It only jailbreaks. If your phone was pwned in the past (for firmware 2.0 or 2.0.1 or 2.0.2) then quickpwn would keep your unlock and activated status.

Finally got it to work.

Ok, here is what I did.

1. I restored my iPhone to the official Apple firmware through iTunes.

2. I put my AT&T SIM card into the phone.

3. I used the Pwnage Tool 2.1 for Mac to create a new unlocked and jailbroken firmware, as described by various how-tos online. I used the "Simple Method" in Pwnage Tool, and I answered "No" to whether I had an official Apple iPhone account when prompted.

4. I then put the iPhone into DFU mode and used the iTunes option-restore method to install the modified firmware created in the previous step.

5. I put my T-Mobile SIM card into the iPhone, and voila it works.

Note: Step 4 was the most difficult, because it took several tries to get the restore to work. I was getting errors such as "unable to restore because an unknown error occurred (1600)", during the restoration process. I just kept repeating the prescribed steps, and finally it just worked.

Now my iPhone is jailbroken and unlocked.

Thanks for your help. Once I understood what the issue was, I had a clearer idea of what I needed to do. Since I don't know where to download a jailbroken and unlocked firmware from. I decided to create my own frimaware using PwnageTool, which did the trick.

Actually quickpwn WILL unlock (it even has the option to click "unlock" as you are running it)....however for some reason wont "activate" a phone. Taking a virgin 2.1 2g iphone and running quickpwn and stuffing a Tmo simcard (for example) in it will leave you with a signal...Tmo logo and the emergency screen which will actually let you call out....but you cant get into the phone.

Yes. This is exactly what happened to me.

What exactly does it mean to "Activate" your phone?

Thx bigopolis, you've helped me greatly. I've been pulling my hair out over this. I'm on AT&T, but not an AT&T Iphone contract, so I've no other sims to really test out. Anyways, I followed your steps and instead of a T-mobile chip I put in my girlfriends AT&T (again, another regular AT&T acct. sim) and for the first time in days of trying I had AT&T bars instead of the dreaded 'no service' issue. But after a few minutes and some failed call attempts, 'no service' came back. I guess AT&T is wise to their sim validation. I bet if I had another carrier's chip things may just work. I'm hoping to encourage others out there that this can be done via software hack. I'm not giving up. Any comment or aid is appreciated. Guess I should try another sim from another company besides ATT and if that works, guess it's time to switch.
