Default 2G phone and baseband upgrade

I got a 3G phone but am going to hold on to my 2G phone.
It still has 1.1.4(4A102) firmware and I used Ziphone to jailbreak it.
I recall reading that the past several firmware upgrades, for the 3G make it impossible (for the time being) to unlock the 3G.

What is the story on the 2G firmware? I want to re-jailbreak the 2G and unlock it so that I can use any SIM card.
What is the latest firmware version, for the 2G, that will allow an unlock?

    Any info appreciated.

The latest 2.1 can be unlocked and jailbroken on a 1st generation iphone using pwnage tool(mac) or quickpwn(windows). Youll want to restore it through itunes to the stock 2.1 fw, then run the latest quickpwn to unlock and jailbreak it. Let me know if you have any more questions.
