I have been playing around with that all morning.
QuickpwnGUI with the 2.1 bundles per this guide filipmares.com - Guide: IPhone 2.1 Windows Jailbreak does jailbreak a 3G , however it leaves the iPhone with no boot logo at all, just a dark screen until the springboard shows. A bit disconcerting. I Googled and found where a guy was able to swap boot logos using Winpwn 2.5 in quickpwn mode. This also does work, although I had already jailbroken first with the 2.1quickpwn.
