upgrading to 2.x?

im on 1.1.4 and idk but i thinkl if i just update it it will brick or do something lame
can anyone tell me how or poswt a link to a wiki that will tell me how to upgrade and re-jailbreak?
do i have to dfu?
or is there a way to keep all of my files?
I have like 50 apps aqnd stuff saved on pretty much all of em....
so if i do have to DFU should i just ssh all the files on to my computer and after re-jailbreaking then copy back via ssh?
im lost
