Benefits of jailbreaking
I've had a 3g for a couple weeks now and decided to jailbreak it today. After looking through Cydia and installing a couple things I can't really see the major benefits of jailbreaking. Anybody want to sell me on the idea?

Depends on what you want to do with it. If you want free apps and customization (themes, sounds, etc.) then jailbreak. Not going to try to sell you on the idea, I have no reason to. If you don;t find it fun/useful then by all means go back to the stock version.

Its just about customizing were Apple left off. There's alot more out there than what Cydia and installer will have loaded, depends on what "sources" you have installed.
Some of the big things are the ability to "theme" your iphone by changing icons, backgrounds, sounds, etc. Little touches here and there.
If you like customizing and basically "screwing" with electronics, jailbreaking will make you happy.

I do like the video recorder, but don't like that I have to pay for it. Stuff like that is kind of annoying. I'm all for implimenting all the stuff that Apple decided to leave out, but paying for stuff that should have come stock just seems kind of counter intuitive to the entire jailbreaking process.
Where can I get some of these "sources" or are they hush hush?

^^Haha, its just a matter of searching, there are alot of them actually in Cydia under sources, you just have to install them and that will give you access to more things.
There are programs that you cant get from Cydia/installer and have to "manually" install on the phone, which takes SSHing into the phone and placing where needed.
Check around the site enough, you'll probably find some things you cant live without.
I also believe there is at least one video recorder type app in Cydia.

Is it possible to have the Apps Store and Installer.app installed on the same iphone?
I only have an iphone 2G 1.1.4 jailbroke w/ cydia and installer, now I want the apps store so I can buy a few neato apps like that Last.fm on the homepage, once it comes out.

So I'm playing around with my phone and starting to like the little things that jailbreaking changes. But one major thing that I really don't like; Every time I push the phone button, it goes straight back to the springboard. Not being able to dial my phone is kind of lame. Anybody know what's up?

That's the point. I can't make calls, add contacts, check my voicemail, see who's called me recently... nothing.

I wouldn't say common... it is common if you messed something up. Not generally going to happen randomly on its own.

sometimes...depends on the apps some beta some not... certain apps conflicting with others... wrong permission.. or the users screwed it up somehow.
but one thing for sure...there is a fix for everything.
This applies to the factory iphones also..sometimes you have a defected phone. Not because you had jailbroken it.

Well the last thing I did before I noticed that the phone was broken was install a theme for winterboard. Seems kind of arbitrary for something like that to mess up the phone app. Maybe I'll give it another shot.
Is there any way to back up my contacts and text messages so I don't lose them yet again?

hopefully you didn't download kate cuz i had the same problem until i uninstalled kate completely, i love having my iphone jailbroken, I have done just about everything there is to do with a jailbroken iphone except unlock it, ive altered carrier logos, loaders, made custom icons, changed my themes, created my own themes, experimented various lockscreens, ringtones, changed my sms tone to a custom tone, edited the text on the sliders, made new slider icons, honestly i'm addicted to tinkering around with my iPhone and if you love electronics you will too

Any Monster Packs for iPhone? I come from modmymoto.com and we always try to help out new users by modding the phone and uploading the MP so other users can download and install and they have all the mods done already. Something like that for iPhones?

I'll sell the idea, iPhone on it's own sucks. You have to pay for everything and the basic functionality is missing loads of stuff. What's missing: you can only switch phone on and off, jailbreak and install sbsettings gives you lots of options now to restart springboard. Sold already. 2) mail - great but why can't I delete all the mail in one go, jailbreak and install delete mail, go settings and turn it on, now i can delete all my mail. Sold. 3) I want to play a game but don't want the hassle of going through I tunes refund procedure if It doesn't work. Jailbreak and ********** will give you everything for free and with ********** you can become a legend if you crack everything. Nowadays there are too many legends and every app is available for free, woo hoo downside app developers might just give up in end. 4) BBC I player, this wasn't available in app store so I jailbroke it and boom there it is in Cydia. 5) iPorn - an app fir porn well is there anything else that would sell a jailbroken option.
