Still looking for an answer

I can't seem to find the answer anyplace. I'm on a first gen running j/b, u/l 2.0 and I want to upgrade to 2.0.1 using WinPwn. What I'm trying to find out are 2 things.

1) if I pwn the phone using the new firmware, how do i get my old data back like emails, SMS, etc? Can I restore an iTunes backup after the Pwn is complete?

2) Whats custom firmware needed for? I dont change my boot logos. Would using one help with the above question?

Biggest thing now that "QuickPwn" is out....winpwn allows you too "unlock" the phone. The whole custom firmware idea was generated to try and keep a "jailbreak" method that lasts through firmware upgrades.

And yes, you can re-sync all your contacts, sms msgs, etc.

can you explain how I can use quickpwn to do this? I'm just looking to upgrade, jailbreak and unlock, restore my data, then restore my apps (which I assume I need to do manually)

quickpwn is GUI interface application...app will prompt you of what to do on your screen. Do a search for quickpwn, read up on it..make sure you have the latest version...download it...run it. Have fun.

you need to download firmware 2.0,1 from download section. Personaly Id use winpwn or pwnage tool but that's cause I change partition size.

Create custom firmware with winpwn or pawnge tool.

Put iPhone in DFU and restore in Itunes with custom firmware you just made.

Then put apps back with Cydia or installer + Appstore.

When you restore in Itunes you have the option to set up as new phone on restore. I've heard your best setting up as new phone but you will loose text messages. You could try restoring but I can't say that it will work without problems. Maybe someone else can assist with this?

Hope this helps some.

P.S. I didn't put my phone In dfu I just conected to PC and hit restore with shift button pressed and chose Custom FW.

Another thing don't tick activate and YouTube if you are on an AT&T or O2 contract as it will cause no service, only choose these if you are unlocked and useing a third party Sim Card.

Alternatively upgrade to stock 2.0,1/2.0,2 on Itunes. Then use quickpwn. If you search on here there are some hood tutorials, it's very straight forward though.

damm iPhone Safari, double posting all the time sorry.

Finally a real answer. So, I guess I'm missing what the custom firmware files does. I mean why create it rather than using a stock one? So, if I used QuickPwn, I could just let iTunes upgrade me then restore my data and jailbreak? I think if I knew what using a custom firmware file does exactly, I could determine which method i want to use.

Actually, most of the 40-odd posts are me asking questions and not getting answers. I've checked tons of posts and they have partial answers to my questions. I post my specific questions in hopes to get answers. Real_Iphonecrazy finally gave me an answer i was looking for, but I still had yet another question. I checked your last 10 posts. Didn't see anything at all helpful. I could easily go around to any board in this forum and post, "do a search and you'll find your answer." But I don't. It's not helpful to those who can't find the answers they're looking for. Now, maybe if you said, "check out this thread" or something like that, it would be considered helpful. "Follow the instructions above and stop dithering", not so much.
