hey poseidon can u help me i normally do know what to but in this situation its drivin me nuts ok here is my problem i upgraded my phone to 2.0 tryin the winpwn and by mistake i load the regular 2.0 firmware not the custom one and now im tryin to downgrade my phone back to 1.1.4 i downloaded the itunes 7.5.0.20 i think and download it the firmware 1.1.4 too here my problem when i set my phone on DFU well is stock on that screen no matter wut i do wont do nothing else the phone goes straight to DFU and i go to restore tried to install the 1.1.4 and i get this stupid msg every time ( The iphone "iphone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (20). plz can u help me with this ? i see that u say that might be that im not on DFU but im on it black screen with the itunes disk with the usb cable on it.

actually got it done u were rigth was dfu mode problem thank anyways great post !

I'm already on 2.0 but i find it slow i need to downgrade to 1.1.4 i followed the steps here but itunes v7.5 did not recognize my phone event in DFU mode ...plz help

Man I don't know...I am on itunes 7.5 (uninstalled 7.7, rebooted and installed 7.5). Also in DFU mode but keep getting the shitty 1601, 1604 errors.

When I placed the iphone in DFU and started itunes 7.5 it said "waiting for ipod" then gave the 1601 error. I restarted Itunes then it said waiting for iphone then 1601 error again...however this time the black screen lit up (turned white).

I restored to original firmware 2.0 using itunes 7.7. Asking for activation. Now following downgrade again. used the DFU app to switch to DFU mode...got a white screen shitty error 1604 when I try restoring to 1.1.4.

Hey, sorry if i'm covering common ground here...

I have a 1st Gen iPhone that was unlocked to 1.1.1
(i purchased it unlocked over a year ago - unsure how it ws unlocked)

If i wanted to upgrade to 1.1.4 and unlock using iliberty or another program, is the above method what i should do?

when i try to restore a message comes up saying i phone could not be restored an unknown error occurred (20) can anybody help me thanks

Generally error 20 means the phone was not put in DFU mode. I can't stress this enough. If done correctly, the screen on the phone will be black with NOTHING on it while you're holding the home button. Itunes will then pop up saying "found iphone in recovery mode, you must restore". If these 2 things don't happen, then you have not done step one correctly.

Error 1600, 1601...etc is generally due to not having iTunes 7.5.

3. Go to My Documents > My Music > iTunes and delete the file called "iTunes Library.itl"

Does that mean it will delte my itunes library

i don't know what error 20 means but someone suggested to take out the sim card and try again, and that error went away and I got to 1016 error, and then followed poseidins steps and it was allllll goood
