Default Unlocked iPhone 4s on Virgin Mobile(US)
Is it possible to run an unlocked iPhone 4s on the Virgin Mobile network in the United States now that VMUS uses the Sprint Network? I have a relative that has Virgin Mobile and would like to have an iPhone 4s, just wanted to see if he could do this as he won't have to switch networks/go to a contract plan if this is possible.

I don't think its possible because the SERIAL number has to be added to their system.. You can get a Sprint/Verizon model to be flashed over to metro pcs or boost mobile.

Sprint supposedly paid Apple big $'s for the iPhone, and since Virgin Mobile USA is owned by Sprint, it wouldn't make a lot of business sense to allow iPhone on that network at half the price ($35 for Virgin, $70 for Sprint).

In short, I would be shocked if Virgin USA allowed anyone to use an iPhone on their network. MetroPCS, Boost, Cricket - different story.

Not going to happen. If your relative wants a 4S, they are going to have to dish out the big bucks and go postpaid. There is one alternative though: If you can unlock a 4S, it may be used with a StraightTalk SIM card. Boom, prepaid 4S that runs on AT&T's blazing fast HSPA+ network.

Virgin Mobile USA is not owned by Sprint. They are a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) which means that they do not have their own towers. They pay Sprint to be able to use their network and brand it as Virgin Mobile.

Has anyone tried to activate an unlocked Sprint iPhone 4 onto Virgin Mobile as of July 2012?

Whoops, hate to burst your bubble here, but Virgin Mobile USA is actually a wholly owned subsidiary of Sprint Nextel Corp.

With Sprint iPhones, when they refer to the phone being "unlocked," they mean that it's unlocked for GSM networks (usually only ones outside of the USA). Since Virgin is a CDMA network, this route might not be the most fruitful.

I'm also afraid that Virgin uses a different PRI/PRL and carrier bundle than Sprint proper, so just trying to switch the phone over to VMUS might not take (plus the fact Sprint will not be happy with you if you try to take your subsidized iPhone and run to prepaid).
