ive read a baseband ios mismatch will cause a looping signal loss.Is this true of the cdma phone as well So should I preserve my baseband or allow it to be upgraded while upgrading to 5.1.1?.again thanks

Ok, did a little research for ya Benny. You are correct, baseband can matter for CDMA iPhones if the firmware does not match the baseband that should come with it (can cause signal issues).
The good news for you is apple never updated the baseband from 5.1.1 to 6.0.1. So you "should" be able to restore to 6.0.1 thereby updating your baseband to 3.0.04. Then you can downgrade back to 5.1.1 using the stitch shsh method of restoring with redsnow. Once back on 5.1.1 you can jailbreak with redsnow or absinthe.

What I've found in my research is you should use redsnow to upgrade. You do Not use cydia. You 1st must DL tiny umbrella to save your SHSH blobs. I would save both to cydia and local ( on your PC). now you must DL the proper iOS file. This will be a .ispw file I believe. Not sure about all the baseband issues. I hav a Verizon iPhone. So I am upgrading through iTunes to ios6 then downgrading to iOS 5.1.1. This updated my baseband. The baseband is what your phone uses that makes it a phone. Without the baseband your phone is an iPod. So research your particular iPhone baseband issues throughly. When that is done. You use redsnow together with the downloaded ispw (iOS) file to update/ change your iOS google redsnow update iOS for details.

I own an untethered jailbroken Verizon iPhone 4 still running on 4.2.8 since the day I bought it. I've never had a reason to upgrade the firmware but most of my apps are outdated and I can't update them because they require a newer firmware version.
I'm not interested in IOS 6.x, therefore I'd like to have 5.1.1 installed.
I would appreciate if either Simon or Benny could guide me through this process. I am not familiar with terms like shsh blobs, baseband, etc.
I noticed that the route to take is to upgrade to 6.0.1 and then downgrade to 5.1.1. Obviously I can't afford to lose my apps, contacts, texts, photos, etc during this process.
Thank you very much in advance.

Ok next question. Do you require a unlock as in gevey SIM card or ultrasnow?
01-11-2013, 08:40 AM #39
My iPhone is Verizon so I don't have a SIM card and it's not unlocked.

So you use ultrasnow then eh?
