Yes jailbreak. No it won't make it slow...unless you download and install a bunch of crap.

If you have a newer iPhone such as 3GS or 4, you won't notice much if any slowdown regardless of what you may want to install jailbreak-wise. If it is an iPhone 3G or 2G then you'd probably see a slowdown if using the above mentioned, but overall it wouldn't affect much unless you really did install a bunch of stuff.

Yes do it, this is my first iPhone and I jailbroke it during the first couple weeks I had it. It's a much better device with the added customization

Definitely jailbreak. Just don't go too crazy on the tweaks, especially GUI related ones.
