my buddy claims his droid does.
By Gps... i mean being in a canyon deep in the mountains
way out of cell range with a view of the sky.

Yes. Grab a GPS app that loads all the data and does not require connection then turn off all data and cell on the iPhone and it will show it.

So this is a available on the iphone?
The droid actually shows a satellite icon on the screen
as a standard feature.
Is it more of a gadget type thing
or a real world alternative to
carrying a garmin GPS?
Been reading gps app reviews.
Battery life seems to be the big issue. Sounds like i'll still be toting my little garmin gecko into the back country.

Yes the GPS will eat your battery. I personally only use the GPS for the few apps that use the GPS stats so you don't have to put in the info or search for it. Like the weather app. Also the geo-tagging for pics.

To me, its more of a gimmick than a real world use of the phone. Yeah.... round the city for turn by turn is novel but
It's obviously not a replacement
yet for a standard gps unit.
When you can run it like an app
without fear of killing your only
communication with the real world.... that will be something cool!
