As far as insurance goes, you have to do that through a 3rd party as far as I know. With AT&T or Apple there is no insurance, just your warranty. I'm betting it will be the same with Verizon.

Yep, usually you can find a squaretrade special (30% off) and pick up a 3rd party warranty that covers accidental. It's unlikely that Verizon or Apple will offer it.

Chances are you won't get the same insurance you're thinking of.
Let me explain why:
It's far too convenient for people to get "robbed" of their iPhone and mysteriously end up with $600 in their bank account.
This isn't that big of a problem with other smartphones with such a low demand, but with the iPhone when you have millions of owners, it is a huge issue.
You'll have to go through Square Trade.
