    1. Click iTunes Store in the menu on the left side of iTunes.
    2. If you're not signed in to the store, click the Account button, then enter your account name and password.
    3. Click the Account button again (your ID appears on the button), enter your password, and then click View Account.
    4. In the Account Information window, click Deauthorize All.

From apple's website. Can only be used once per year.

No, not yet. They are still working on freeing all of the music.

Well if you are telling the truth, you are not doing something right. If you reformat the same computer 6 times you will not be over the limit. The authorization depends on your computer hardware and os. So as long as you reformat using the same os the computer will still be authorized. But if you authorized five seperate computers (or OS), you can contact the support team by email and they reset the authorization.

I believe there's more into this than we know. I too have formatted my computer and forgot to deauthorize a couple of times, so now I have about 2 or 3 authorized computers, which are actually in the same hardware. Probably it stores the authorization in the registry or something, but certainly, if you format your computer and you install iTunes, it won't count as authorized, you have to authorize it again.

In my case I didn't change anything, I was using iTunes and 5 minutes later it told me that I have to authorize my computer again, for 5ft time.
