There is no way to tell. The only place that still has them is most likely ATT.

I just read that you can check what firmware is preinstalled by going to the emergency call, entering *3001#12345#* then pressing "Call". Under Versions you will find what revision firmware is on the phone out of the box.

    03.12.06_G Is firmware 1.0.0
    03.14.08_G Is firmware 1.0.1 and 1.02
    04.01.13_G Is 1.1.1

This is how to check firmware on unactivated iphone. You firstly turn on phone and then slide to unlock. It will say emergency calls only - enter above number and you will find the serial number!!!!

I wish there was a way to tell without opening the box.

My local stores are all out of 1.0.2. Both AT&T and Apple.

I just read more on this. Thought I'd pass it along.

iPhones with serial numbers (4th and fifth digit) being 37 or lower were 1.0.2

iPhones with serial numbers (4th and fifth digit) being 38, no way to tell for sure, this is when they start changing firmware on iPhones.

iPhones with serial numbers (4th and fifth digit) being 39 and above would have firmware 1.1.1

hey... I'm answering my own question. I guess you can tell before opening the box. I'll just act dumb and ask to see the iPhone box before buying.

I'm willing to drive all over town to find and buy another 1.0.2 iPhone (for my brother in law). Where I am, washington, D.C. area, we have 2 Apple stores and countless AT&T stores.

You'd think they'd update the packaging to show the new icon for the iTunes wifi music store on the outside... Then it would be no problem.

the serial numbers mentioned earlier are correct. if you can find a helpful agent at the AT&T or Apple store, they can check the stock for you.
I believe they are going fast though. In the Virginia Beach area, i had to go to three different store before i found one. You can almost bet the Apple store is all out of the 1.0.1's by now too.
