Thread: buying second hand phone

I am buying a second hand phone and I understand I need to check the imei and esn.
Is it possible that I buy a phone with clean imei and esn and then a month or so later it becomes blacklisted?
What is the difference between the imei and electronic serial number?
If it becomes blacklisted or has a bad esn is there a way out of it? I noticed people are actually selling bad esn phones on ebay?

That's a risk you take on eBay. Generally what people do is sell the phone and wait 45 days if they're going to scam you as that's the cut off for opening an eBay dispute. Had it happen to me - bought a brand new boxed ip4 worked for 2-3 months and the stopped getting signal. Checked the IMEI and realised the original owner had put in an insurance claim. Contacted eBay and they did bugger all about it. Beware

I think ESN is on CDMA whereas IMEI is GSM? Correct me if I'm wrong..
