iPhone in the USA
Hi all
Sorry to ask here but there is more traffic here.
I am traveling to the USA for 12 weeks between Nov and Feb. and I was hoping that somebody could advise if I will be able to get a Sim Card on Pay n Go with Data and who from.
I am also planning on buying my iPhone 5 when there so will Nano Sim cards be available ?
And one last thing does anyone know if we will be able to modify our Micro sims into Nano sims, as there seems to be some confusion if this will be possible.
Thanks

I don't think you can cut a Micro into a Nano sim. You shouldn't have a problem getting a Nano sim when you get here.

Yes you can cut it, as well as buying a Nano Sim cutter, readily available. Google is your friend.
By November there should be lots of companies offering a Nano Sim I would expect.

I don't have a problem cutting the Sim , I have cut loads in the passed.
The problem is the thickness issue ? Or is it that little it does not matter.
Does anyone actually know ?

Oh, so first you have to cut the sim properly.
Then you need to file it down to be able to fit into the slot.
Hmmm, quite messy.. eh

Yeh that's what I was reading too. But then I heard that because you are taking the 1/16 th off it made the Sim Short in the tray.
This is why I was asking here if anyone has actually tried and succeeded it this. I don't mind working for it as long as you get something at the end 😉

Where are you from? Reason I ask is that there's two versions of the ip5 and their LTE bands are different so just make sure that it'll work at home if you're just travelling in the USA.

Hi
I am from the UK, but I travel a lot around the world. And this is why I was going to get a unlocked IP5 from the US as it would be £150 cheaper than in the UK. I mainly travel round Europe, so are you saying that I should get one kind of phone ? I was hoping to just go into the Apple store and buy one ?
Also nobody has said I can get a pay and go sim whilst I am there with a data plan. So is it possible ?

Youll need the GSM model A1429: LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5) for the UK and pretty much the rest of the world.
The GSM A1428 is the US and canada LTE version and works on LTE 4 and 17 so won't work in the UK on LTE at least, youll get maximum of HPSA+ tho.
No point getting the CDMA version as that won't work in the uk.
As for Plans I live in the UK so can't comment dude!

This is well confusing ? So are you saying that when I walk into the Apple store in the US. And I tell them I want to buy a factory unlocked iPhone 5 I have to make sure that it's the A1429 GSM Model ?
How will I know that they give me the right one. And when you say it will not work in the UK, what do you actually mean ! It will not work at all or I will not just be able to use LTE.
Can you or somebody please advise.
I thought factory unlocked phone would mean you can use any where in the World

As far as I understand it if you buy an iPhone 5 in the states on GSM you'll get the A1428, you you buy on CDMA you'll get the a1429 on CDMA. If you buy it factory unlocked you'll get the A1428 (as this is the standard GSM model in north America). It will work fine in the UK but only up.to HPSA+ speeds and not the full LTE as they use different bands here in the UK. It's NOT a world phone for LTE!

Thanks for the advise.
But one last thing. In the first post you say get the A1429. And then you say Get the A1428. So I am a bit confused.
What I want is a iPhone 5 that is unlocked to any network and will work in the UK and Europe. So the plan was to go into the apple store and get a factory unlocked phone. I don't need LTE but I will need Internet on the phone.
So one last time which one do I get. I assume the A1428 version which is standard GSM. Am I correct ?

I haven't ever said get the A1428 as it won't get LTE speeds here in the UK. Get the GSM A1429 but I'm not sure you can get it in the US. You'll get a A1429 if you buy it in the UK. You'll get a A1428 if you buy it in the US.
GOOD LUCKLast edited by docmagoo2; 09-22-2012 at 02:30 PM.
