06-10-2012, 04:17 PM #1Why is the next iPhone being called the iPhone 5?
Why are news outlets calling the next gen iPhone the iPhone 5? There already have been 5 models:
By that logic, the iPhone 4 should have been called the iPhone 3 since the 3GS was a spec bump like the 4S. I know I'm not the only one who noticed this.
It also would make sense that the iPhone 6 launches with iOS6.

Probably because it sounds good. Always more about marketing then actual keeping in line with which iPhone number it really is.
Nobody knows for sure what it will be called though, not until Apple officially announce it.

It should be named iPhone V to make it cooler.

it should be called the "New iPhone" just like the "New iPad"

iPhone with 3G -> iPhone 3G
iPhone with 3G and speed -> iPhone 3GS
At this point if they named the current iPhone 4 as iPhone 2, it would cause a lot of confusion.
Basically 3G is the culprit, but things should be smooth from now. 5, 5S, 6, 6S and so on....that is if Apple doesn't get creative in naming them like they did with the iPad line.
