iPhone 3GS Recovery
Hello Modmyi members,
I have an iPhone 3GS (5.1, new bootrom) that was working fine until it started lagging and restarting when too many apps would run. I decided to restore it but it didn't go as planned.
Currently the iPhone 3GS is stuck in recovery mode and restarts mid-restore. The furthest I can get through a restore is about 1/5 (with 5.0.1 custom iFaith signed firmware) before it either freezes/hangs on the restore bar... Occasionally the will iPhone restart instead of freezing/hanging.
I follow the usual process of custom restores (DFU mode w/ exploit, shift+restore, etc.). I read that removing the edits to the host file will fix this, however it didn't help at all.
I'm stuck... help please?! Thank you for any and all help!If I helped you in any way, please click on the button!

So u put into pwnd DFU mode? What did u use?....and u built custom ifaith IPSW with blobs?...I've done same and it works fine for me.. Maybe try building a new IPSW..I have 4.2.1, 4.3.3, and 5.0.1 ifaith signed IPSW and all work fine...let us know how it goes...

Also make sure you give it enough time. I was having similar issues when restoring my old 3GS where it would stall (or so I thought) but I just ended up giving it more time. Also try a different USB port if you're having problems

If you can't get it working at all I just reccomend that you restore to 4.2.1 (5.1 is a little high for a 3GS) or just restore to 5.1 without an iPSW and see what happens. I also reccomend that you try a different computer since sometimes the computer could be interfering. Also make sure you have the latest version of iTunes.I will no longer be very active here anymore due to a variety of reasons.

I found 5.1 seemed to work fine on my 3GS...Still eats about as much battery as 5.0.1 did...isn't 4.2.1 snappy with a JB or as battery efficient...and I didnt like tethered...but it runs...
Went back to 4.2.1 for a while...now back on 5.0.1...untethered is better...

I've heard 4.2.1 just runs smoother on the 3GS since it's not a memory hog like iOS 5.I will no longer be very active here anymore due to a variety of reasons.

Oh yeah...4.2.1 is best on 3GS...I always say...but my most valuable app was broken on it's last update for 4.x...lockinfo...need that...had to come up again...wish 5.1 was untethered.....

Yah. Dev Team has it in the works. I'd like to update to 5.1 myself so I don't lose my battery like nuts but other then that it's not really worth itI will no longer be very active here anymore due to a variety of reasons.

What's the big deal about it? I know they changed some of the photos stuff but other then that and the battery I don't really think they did anything significant...I will no longer be very active here anymore due to a variety of reasons.

Really just them two. Her phone wouldnt last half a day now just can go almost all day before she has to plug it in.

Yes the iPhone 3GS is put into DFU mode when I do this and the IPSW version is 5.0.1 w/ 5.0.1 SHSH stitched into it. The 3GS will just hang at 1/5 of the restore bar and not move at all (I've left it for approximately 2h and it didn't budge).
If I perform a factory restore it hangs at the "Verifying Restore with Apple" bar OR the iPhone restarts itself as soon as the restore process starts (giving me error (14) which means the connection between the iPhone and computer was lost because the iPhone reset itself).
Only iFaith custom firmwares seem to get by to the restore bar. I've tried to restore to 4.1, 4.2.1, 4.3, 4.3.5, 5.0.1 and 5.1 and only the iFaith custom firmware was able to start restoring before it hangs or am given error (14).
Error (21) and error (9) show on occasion.
I'll try on another computer, see what that gives me.
QUESTION: Does the hosts file/TinyUmbrella still proxy for the 4.x.x firmwares or is it down for all firmwares?
Thanks in advance for all help.If I helped you in any way, please click on the button!

Yah it could be your computer, maybe a bad USB slot or something. As for your question, I'm not really sure about since I've never had to use TinyUmbrella.I will no longer be very active here anymore due to a variety of reasons.
