Do notifications from Facebook/G+ constantly drain battery?

I was basically wondering if I have these on:

- Does it mainly use battery only when a notification happens?

-Or is it constantly checking repeatedly using a lot of battery regardless of the amount of activity?

Only when a notification arrives, the router will wake it up and push some data packets, how the phone acts on notification is up to your setting.
