Default can I connect my iphone to my 3g USB dongle through a wireless router?

hey guys, I'm overseas in Jordan right now and I'm trying to connect my iphone to a wireless internet source. I bought a 3g USB dongle that is giving me great internet access to my laptop, however, after setting up and connecting an ad hoc network, my iphone still says it cant connect to the internet. ive done a ton of searching over the past 3 days and after a ton of trial and error, I've decided to bring it up to the forum.
I've kinda tossed out the idea of connecting the iphone the ad hoc network because I came across the idea of buying a wireless router and running an ethernet cable from my laptop to the router and then connecting my iphone to the routers transmission. will this work? if so what kind of router would I need?

If you guys can provide any other ideas as to how I can connect my iphone to the internet that my laptop is running on, PLEASE let me know.

any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

the way i did it was using ad-hoc... i use to tether my internet from laptop to iPod through ad-hoc... it should work. It would also help if you stated your operating system...

but take a look around this website for windows 7: Create Wireless Ad Hoc Network in Windows7 to Share Internet

and for windows xp: [Vista/XP] How to Share Internet Connection in Ad hoc Network - UnlockForUs

    , hope this helps o.0
