08-10-2011, 11:14 AM #1How to Restore 3G MC on 4.0 Stuck in Recovery Mode
I appreciate any help that can be offered. My wife has a 3G (MC model I believe) running 4.0 that was jailbroken and unlocked (Tmobile) last year with jailbreakme.com. It had been running poorly and was accidentally put in recovery mode during a reboot and will not exit it now.
I have run TU and no blobs are shown on file. I have attempted to restore to 3.1.3 and 4.2.1 so far with no luck using itunes on a mac. I keep getting the 'firmware is uncompatible' message.
Any ideas how to proceed? Thanks!

Is this a 3G iPhone ?

I don't think the iPhone 3G supports firmware 4.0+ so maybe you have a 3GS? Anyways... what error does iTunes give you when you try and restore? Why not just restore to 4.3.5 (assuming it's a 3GS) and jailbreak/unlock with redsn0w.

Yes, it is a 3G model. I am not sure, but I think it is an MC model, but of course I can't tell since it is stuck in recovery.
They supported 4.? intitially, just ran poorly. Every restore file I try says 'firmware file not compatible'.

Are you restoring to custom firmware ?
And what firmware do you want on there ?

No, I am using the firmware here on MMI, I have tried 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.1.2.... All give the same message, firmware file is not compatible...
Don't really care as long as I can unlock it for Tmobile...

Ok, make sure you don't restore to stock firmware if you want to keep your unlock, only custom firmware will preserve your current baseband.
Is your iphone at Homescreen ?
Do you have a compass icon on your springboard.

It's in recovery. Pic of USB cable connecting to itunes.. It only goes to this and DFU mode.
It is stuck in the endless recovery loop. TU and Recboot exit have failed to end the loop.

Look at the back logo, is it shiny or dull logo ?

Download Redsn0w from here : Here
Download 3gs 4.1 ipsw from here : iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From
Download Snowbreeze for 4.1 from here : Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: sn0wbreeze-v2.1.zip
Build your custom firmware : Use expert mode whether to activate or not , depends if you have the official sim card
Once build , it will be on your desktop.
Run Redsn0w, browse to stock 4.1, this is not for jailbreak but there is an option to put your iphone into pwned dfu, do that.
Once your iphone is into pwned dfu.
Run Itunes : shift + restore to custom firmware of 4.1
You don't have to run TU for this case, just make sure your hosts file is pointed towards apple server.
Once you have Cydia, your baseband should remain the same as 05.13.xx which is unlockable by Ultrasn0w.

First hiccup.. I'm running this on a Mac, is there a similar Redsn0w for it?

You can use Pwnage tools to create a cfw of 4.1, yes there is redsn0w for Mac, you can also use the pwned dfu from Pwnage tools.
I think the version of PT is 4.1.3 to build cfw of 4.1

Found PT4.1.3. Currently building the ipsw..

All is right in the world again! Thank you so much for the help... PT 4.1.3 with a custom build of 4.1. Followed up by pwned DFU and alt-restore in itunes got her going again. Updated the old cydia files and ran ultrasnow to a freshly unlocked phone.
