Iphone 3GS
Hi
I have searched and searched for hours for a solution to this and I cannot come across anything.
Im pretty sure this may of been posted before but as I very little knowledge of iphones I could really do with some help.
I was recently given my sisters Iphone 3GS. Its on version 4.2.1
As its on this update version its slow and the phone keeps turning itself off when in sleep mode. I managed to find out that this is due to the 4.2.1 update and so the phone needs to be downgraded to atleast a 3.1.2 or whatever 3.something version you recommend.
I managed to download two files. iphone2,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw and iPhone2,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw. When trying to restore the phone and select the files via Shift-Click it says the firmware is not compatiable.
The phone only has backups with a 4.2.1 update so I cannot restore to anything sooner.
The phone is not jailbroken as I have no idea how to jailbreak the phone.
I basically need to downgrade the phone so It doesnt turn off everytime its in standby mode. It was fine when I first received it but I didnt save a back up for it as I wanted it completly wiped.
Can anyone help me with this? I would love to actually be able to use the phone without it turning off and the 4.2.1. update really drains the battery and makes the phone slow. I did think it was a battery problem and ended up paying stupid amounts to have the battery replaced to only find out its a software problem.
If someone can give me links as to what I can do that would be great.
Im not an Iphone wizz as I mentioned above so Id need specific instructions as to what to do.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Will

With no prior iPhone jailbreak you have very few choices. Apple is currently authorizing 4.3.5 today. Most likely that is your only option (maybe 4.1 also)

To check if you have additional options, download Tiny Umbrella (link below), connect your device, and Save all SHSH. Your firmware options are limited to the SHSH blobs Tiny Umbrella finds. Do this now and report back with the SHSH blobs found.

That's the beginning. How press Save SHSH. More log entries will appear.
When finished go to the general tab. The results or SHSH blobs will be displayed.
What is listed there?

According to Tiny Umbrella your phone is a 3G, not a 3GS .... and ... you have 4.1 and 4.2.1 SHSH blobs saved. It means you can restore to 4.1 and 4.2.1.
Because it's a 3G, you can ALSO restore to any 3.x (3.0, 3.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3, etc) iOS version. 3.x does NOT require SHSH blobs
.
You have many choices. What do you want to do?
My suggestion: 3.1.3 is the best for a 3G phone.
Look around and decide for yourself. When you're ready, more than likely someone will be around to help.

I was wondering why it said 3G and not 3GS when the SHSH blobs came up.
Now I know its a 3G phone hopefully ill be able to figure this all out as the files ive been downloading are all for the 3GS. Thank you so much for your help and for your patience.
Hopefully ill figure this out now
Thanks again!

Note: Do you need an unlock? If yes, what is your modem firmware version (Settings / General / About)???
..If you want 3.1.3, here's a link to a video. It's fairly easy
....Just make sure you use 3G files and ignore anything related to the 2G.
