How I got Unlimited Data Back After the 2G "Trick" Was Supposedly Removed (08/02/11)
Let me preface this by saying that I didn't follow any guide that I have seen to a T, simply because I couldn't. Let me also point out that I HAD the grandfathered plan, but I canceled it and made it a $10 add-a-line in February (since it was cheaper than canceling the contract - boy am I glad I kept it). Long story short, my fiance went to the VZW iPhone as part of work (free all you can eat everything). She stuck with it but reception sucks in our house so she wanted her iPhone back. I tried calling ATT, they told me to shove it. I got as far as getting ready to cancel the line, but decided riding out the contract was still cheaper than the ETF.
Doing a little research, I decided to hunt for a 2G. I found one on a WTB craigslist ad for $25. It was in rough shape, but in working order. I figured $25 was a worthy gamble. It activated fine through iTunes using the sim I popped in out of the lady's dumb phone. It took about 12 hours for me to get the activation email, but I was able to browse the net on edge and make calls. The plan was to use my fiance's iPhone that she had kept and make the swap. As luck would have it, it wouldn't take a charge. Not sure why, but it wouldn't )I have a black 16gb iPhone that won't charge or turn on that I will be trying to sell, LOL). SO.... I went on the hunt, but didn't want to spend over $300. Almost sprung for a white 16GB for $375 on here, but found the same thing in white for $300. Cut the sim around 4pm today and just got my text (9:30pm) saying my plan was upgraded to the iPhone 4 plan. *3286# states the plan is unlimited.
Here is a step by step recap.
Canceled data in February
Purchased used 2G About a week ago and activated through iTunes
Purchased iPhone 4 today, cut sim, poppped it in
Got text 5 hours later that my data plan was upgraded (and confirmed it was still unlimited)
I suspected that two things helped.
1. I had already been on an unlimited plan before
2. I wasn't currently using the iPhone 4 (as in I didn't have a 2GB data plan that I was trying to upgrade to unlimited. I had zero data on this line which I upgraded to 2G data that was upgraded to 3G data).
**this last step, I think, was key------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.
