hints for buying iPhone when travelling to US

hi guys! I live in argentina, and buying an iPhone here is really painful (especially money-wise :P) the device costs the same money that in US (without contract) but with a very expensive contract also.. anyway, a friend of mine is travelling to the US by mid november and I asked him if he could buy for me the phone, fourtunately he said yes! what I need to know is some places where he can go and buy a non-contract GSM version.. I've read here in the news that apple sells unlocked phones, but I don't seem to find un-subsided ones.. amazon has a few but I'm a bit skeptical to tell him to buy one from there, I don't know
what do you suggest??

Tell him to go to apple and to buy a factory unlocked one. It will not be on a contract.
