Default itunes not letting me custom restore.

I have itunes 10.3.1. I'm trying to downgrade my iphone 3g from 4.2.1 to 3.1.3 firmware, just out of frustration because no matter what I try it always goes back to being so slow. When I try to restore my iphone with the old firmware (shift + restore/update) it doesn't show the window where i can chose the appropriate .ipsw file...
I remember this would always work on older versions of itunes, and I've been searching for an old version of 10.2 i could replace 10.3.1 with, but no luck. Please help, the iphone was definitely not made to run on 4.2.1 and I just want to have something that performs well and that I can use to the fullest. Thanks.

Place the ipsw file on the desktop then go to the desktop folder.

You actually have to hold shift and click restore. I hope this is what you are doing. My suggestion would be to use a more updated version of itunes if you feel your version isn't working properly.

That's exactly what I'm doing. Rather than the window with the file browser popping up, there's a notification that says "are you sure you want to restore to the latest updates?" or something. Are you sure if I download the new Itunes this will work?

Might sound stupid but is your shift button working? If so, try using an older version of iTunes. Be sure to completely remove your current iTunes (as in doing a complete uninstall and removing all traces if applicable).

You can find old versions of iTunes from oldapps.com

Try the other shift key. If it won't work try using the alt key

i tried both shift keys, i can capitalize text with them so there's nothing wrong. i'll try alt when i get home. it should work with shift though, i'm surprised i haven't heard anything about this problem anywhere, all the tutorials on youtube and on other sites show the shift working..

Sorry its not working. It seems you either have a vindictive computer or itunes is upset with you.

I would uninstall everything and try to start over. That means everything that you can possibly uninstall: itunes, apple software update, apple application support, and apple mobile device support. You should be able to find all of them in the control panel.

Once they are completely gone, just reboot the system and reinstall them with a fresh copy of itunes from that oldapps website from earlier. Hopefully this will solve your problem.
