thats grand thank you...i searched google and found people in the same situation..and found a solution,a person on the forum created a windows script in which you could run to tell the device to reboot..but the download is no longer available..you seen anything like this for me incase it happens in future?

Just an update. I downgraded my 3G to 3.1.3 and loaded cydia and backgrounder. The phone works well and is faster. Thanks for your help.
