iPhone 4 Serial Number Question
So a guy I know brings me an I4 to wipe and fix for him. I normally go through the settings and write down the serial number for parts references and I notice that the last 3 digits say "A4S" but capacity says 29.5 GB. Now correct me if I am wrong but I always thought if it had an "S" then that was determined a 16 GB and if it had a "T" then it was a 32 GB. How is this possible? and if I wipe it, is it going to go back to its original capacity of 16 GB. I'm a bit surprised as I always thought the serial number was easy to determine the color and size and date of manufacturing. Am I missing something??

So after digging around on the phone I find out that it has a Fake About Screen. Why anybody would want this I have no idea but looks like I am gonna have to break the news to the guy who brought it to me to fix it.

Glad you figured it out. That's quite interesting actually, I didn't think about that tweak. Sucks for the buyer though, good thing you've got a good eye for that stuff.

Well normally I dont go snooping through other people's phones and apps but it was really bothering me. Yeah unfortunately I'm probably gonna hear a lot of words that aren't gonna sound so nice

Why is it bad to break it to the guy? Why not just remove that tweak and get on with your business?

Yeah the price difference between a 16GB and a 32GB can be at least $20-$50 right? Sometimes up to $100 difference. I'd be pissed to have bought what I thought was a 32GB only to find out I paid that price for a 16GB and I don't have the 32GB capacity.

+1. Exactly. The only way to tell is through decoding the serial number or actually looking at the capacity itself on an I4. Thats if it isnt spoofed the way the one I was working on was. This just goes to show that you should verify everything if you plan to buy second hand.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It's good to know some of the methods used by scammers and how to combat them. Can't be too careful

So I finally finished with the device and the guy wasn't too happy with the fact that he was conned into buying a 16 GB which was to be expected. But on the brighter side he did offer it to me for $250.
